Jivaka Komarabhacca was a personal ayurvedic physician to the Buddha in the 6th century. His life began very humbly indeed, on a heap of rubbish where a prostitute had left him. Only by chance was he discovered still alive (“jiva”) by a prince who named him Jivaka and raised him like a son.
