Sometimes I feel very lonely. I really don’t know what to do to get rid of this. I need someone to support me and someone on whom I can rely on. But no one is ready for 100% commitment. What to do?

When you feel lonely, sit and meditate
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:Any companionship when it goes from a place of wanting or lack, to contributing, it is long lasting. You came into this world all alone. Even if you are born twins, you are alone. When you go from here, you are going to go alone. Do not try to run away from loneliness. It is a blessing in disguise. This is the time for you to be centered. Push away everything around you. You will find that you are the scintillating energy of the universe. You are the centre of the consciousness. You are the ultimate truth. And this loneliness is only one step away from realizing that. Loneliness exists because you want to grab something from outside.Lord Krishna in Gita has said, ‘Anityam asukham lokam imam prapya bhajasva mam’. He is saying, ‘This world is impermanent and there is no fun in it; there is no joy in it. Look up to me, merge in me. Put your attention onto me’.It is time for you to do this. Trying to fill your loneliness by looking for a companion or anything outside is not going to work. Know that you are in this planet to give something and then pack up and leave. That is it. You have come here to give something. Take nothing from here. When you get into this knowledge, or into the centre core of your existence, you will not feel lonely at all. You will feel that the consciousness around you is alive. You will see everyone as your friend. However they behave, it is immaterial, from your side, they are your friends. You become like a mother because a mother never minds if the kid is throwing pranks or tantrums, kicking or screaming. Children do all sorts of things. She doesn’t mind whether he is smiling or crying. She feels that the baby is mine. You will feel so big that the whole universe, the whole world feel part of you. This is the way to get rid of loneliness. It does not happen by searching for someone to match your mindset. It will match only for a while, because nature has made you so unique. Each one of you has got a different thumb print. That itself shows your uniqueness. You may find some partner and feel very good for 7 years or 10 years. But you know, even after 40 years people feel that they were never together. You wonder, how they could live for 40 years and suddenly say, “We do not match each other. We are so different people”.Come on, wake up and see. Don’t look for something or someone to fill your vacuum. There is song from a kavi (poet) which says, “My beloved comes to me in my dreams”.When you think that this whole world is a dream, you shake hands with your beloved. Once you embrace your beloved, there is no loneliness anymore, anywhere, ever. This is the spiritual path.I am not against you having a relationship or a family, or getting married. You can have your spouse or your companion, but not from the space of wanting something from them. You can imagine a partnership where you are content and you are only contributing to the other person. Such a relationship will last longer. When you feel lonely, sit and meditate. Listen to bhajans or songs. Your beloved is within you. You just have to look inwards. Once you find the beloved within you, then you will find him/her everywhere in creation.Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
Did you know that every finger in your hand is connected to a planet?
Every finger in your hand is connected to a planet. The thumb is connected to Mars. Mars stays alone.
Index finger is connected to Jupiter (Jupiter shows the path, it is the teacher). When you want to show something, you show using the index finger, this is Jupiter. The middle finger is connected to Saturn; Saturn is the servant. The ring finger is connected to the Sun; the Sun is the king. And who owns the jewels? The king, and so you put rings only on the ring finger. That’s why it’s called the ring finger. The little finger is connected to Mercury. So when you do chin mudra, what is happening? The index finger (Jupiter) and the thumb (Mars) are coming together, that is wisdom and power. Why is the thumb connected to Mars? It is because whenever you win, what do you do? You put your thumbs up. Thumbs up is a sign of victory. When you lose what do you do? You put your thumbs down. So these gestures are so inbuilt in us.Different planets affect different parts of your body. Your teeth is connected to Saturn. Your eyes are connected to the Sun, your cheeks are connected to Venus, forehead to Mercury, nose to Jupiter. I mean this as the connection of microcosm with the macrocosm. It is so fascinating!Similarly, moods depend on the moon. A mood does not stay for more than two and a quarter day. That is the amount of time the moon is at one place. The moment the moon moves from that place; your mood also changes. And when the moon and Saturn combine, people get depressed. So these emotions, these feelings, they come and they go away. Nothing is permanent. No planet is permanently stationary in one place. They all move. But when you identify yourself with any one of these emotions, you get stuck. That’s when you don’t move. That is when it infiltrates into your body and you get sick, and all such things happen. Isn’t it fascinating? So what is the way? How to move on from that?On a cloudy day, when a flight takes off, what does it do? It goes above the clouds, and then there is sunshine. That is what the spiritual practices are. They move us away from the Chit Akasha(the space of the mind) to the Chida Akasha(space of pure consciousness). We move beyond all the emotions.9 planets moving through the 12 constellations brings 108 units of change. So to enhance the good effects and to reduce the malefic effects, ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ is chanted 108 times. That uplifts you, uplifts your spirit, and takes you beyond. It connects you to the Chida Akash(space of pure consciousness).Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
True Seeker Needs To First Respect Nature
Rivers have been the lifeline of all civilisations; no wonder they are considered sacred across cultures. In India, the Ganga symbolises knowledge, Yamuna was known for love stories, Narmada stood for bhakti, knowledge and logic, Saraswati for brilliance and architecture, and India got its name from the Sindhu.Sanskrit has a beautiful word for water, apa and the word aptha means ‘that which is born out of water’. Aptha also means ‘the dearest one’. So it’s the same word for both ‘the dear one’ and ‘water.’ Sixty to 70 per cent of our body is made up of the water element. You need water vapour in the atmosphere; you need certain amount of humidity in the atmosphere. And you need water to drink as a fluid. Whether you dig deep into the Earth or you look above the Earth, there is groundwater and water contained in rain clouds. Just imagine a world bereft of clouds. There needs to be no reiteration of the fact that life will not survive. In a land where water was recognised as the basis of life force and rivers were considered sacred, we’ve come a long way from worshipping, venerating and nurturing our rivers, to polluting them with all kinds of toxic substances. Waters of the Ganga are not potable after it crosses Haridwar and many other rivers are facing similar pollution or are drying up.In recent times, we are moving away from Nature and greed has made us insensitive to our own environment. It’s only when we move away from nature that we start polluting. Mass industrialisation has led to large-scale deforestation, exploitation of natural resources and pollution of air and water. We need to go back respecting Nature and being sensitive to our environment. An intimate relationship with Nature is built into the human psyche. Historically, nature, mountains, rivers, trees, the sun, the moon — have always been honoured. It’s only when we start moving away from our connection to Nature and our own selves, that we begin polluting and destroying the environment.According to ancient scriptures, we have five sheaths, physical environment, physical body, mind, intuitive sheath, and the Self. Our connection with the environment is the most important. A clean and positive environment can affect all the other layers of existence. When there’s harmony in these layers, there’s a greater sense of peace and connectedness.Spirituality has the power to check greed. It elevates one’s consciousness and brings a sense of caring and commitment for the whole planet. Spirituality elevates our consciousness. It opens our eyes to the beauty of Nature, encourages us to revere Nature and life and helps bring more joy and celebration into our lives. A spiritual outlook and sensitivity is essential to foster environmental consciousness.Do not look for God somewhere in the sky, but see God in the mountains, water, trees and animals. When a seeker can honour the sanctity of the environment, then he can experience the same sanctity in his own mind. For the one who has transcended his mind, all time, every place and every mood is anyway sacred.

A simple technique to deal with your emotions and moods
See this whole world as bubbles rising in water. See people as bubbles on the surface of the Brahman (Infinite Consciousness). You know how water bubbles up? Like that, everybody is rising, playing their own games and dissolving back into the Infinite. It is the same in your own life. Your mind is a bubble on the surface of the Brahman, Infinity.
See how many changes happen in your mind during the course of the day. How many changes are happening in you? Just sit, and think about one person for a whole day. You will see all types of emotion come and go. Anger, frustration, dejection, doubt, etc. You like them and dislike them and you feel all this is nothing, and would like to run away. All these bubbles rise and fall in your mind. Your mind is such a wave of bubble in the Self.Look at your moods! They are bubbles on the surface of your mind. It’s no secret that a mood remains not more than two-and-a-quarter days, pleasant or unpleasant. Many times when people meet their very dear ones, whom they love very much, they are in a joyous mood. And then they find themselves changing within the two and a quarter days! Their mind is changing. They don’t understand what is happening! The mind is also like that. It doesn’t stay firm. The joke here is, you cannot hold onto pleasant moments; they come and go. But unpleasant things come, and you cling on to them. This is an age old habit of hanging on to unpleasant memories more than pleasant memories. With skill, you can see all is Love, all is Divinity. When you see someone getting angry or frustrated, you can either see the love behind their anger and frustration, or only see their outer projection. Why does someone get angry? Because they loved something, and it didn’t happen. Why does someone get frustrated? Because they loved something very much and they did not get it. Why does someone do service? There is love behind that service. Why does someone sing? Because they experience a wonderful feeling of love. There is love behind every action and every emotion, positive or negative. That’s why I say love is not an emotion. I say it is your existence. It is something from which your life is made up of. So you can never lose it, but you need some skill to know it, experience it, and make it blossom in life.Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
The simple secret to deal with "Feelings"
We can transcend feelings easily when we know that there is something which is much more basic to life than feelings, and that is the self; the life force, which is not changing at all.
We have 1,72,000 nadis in the body. Sometimes the knowledge nadi opens up; sometimes the music nadi opens up. Different nadis open up and you experience different things. So, don’t be so obsessed with your feelings.Don’t focus on that which is happening. Instead, focus on what you can do and what you have to.Often, we don’t concentrate on what we have to do but we sit and ponder over that which is happening. We put so much attention on what is happening rather than on what we are doing. Put attention on what you are doing and leave whatever is happening to Nature. Nature will take you through whatever is happening.I tell you, whether it is thoughts or emotions or feelings, it is not an isolated incidence. It is a global phenomenon. Suppose you go to a place where there is an Independence Day celebration, or some National Day Celebration and everybody is in a charged mood, singing patriotic songs, you suddenly start feeling so patriotic. Tears start coming from your eyes.Similarly if you are watching a show where some victim is talking about their story on how a politician has victimized so many people; suddenly you feel angry. Everybody suddenly feels a sort of patriotism, it wells up within you.The movie directors and producers know how to invoke these emotions in you, and what music fits in there. They will put the right kind of music that you will start crying or laughing. You know, feelings are associated with music, and emotions can be evoked with music.Throw your feelings out, listen to your intellect and see what you need to do. That is it. Know that whatever you have to get, you will get. Whatever is due to you, will come to you. And whatever you need to do, you must do it.Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
If you are willing to look beyond what is already known…
The mature intellect brings forth devotion that is always in awe of creation. When something is unfathomable, the intellect is in awe. When the mind takes rest in the vastness of consciousness, only then can it know the Truth. This can only happen through Shraddha. Shraddha is not just faith, it is to love something that is beyond the purview of knowing. And if one is willing to look beyond what is already known, then the vast wealth of knowledge embraces them.
The mind keeps wandering from one sense to another in search of satisfaction. It is only when you realize that this joy is caused by something greater, you can be centered. There is a saying that when one appreciates a flower, the flower feels sad as the creator of the flower is not being appreciated. In Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna declares himself as the cause of all the joy of the senses. The intellect keeps getting stuck in the senses but when the mind, intellect and Chitta get fixed on the Divine, the highest can be attained. If one is unable to be completely fixated on the Divine, then one can establish devotion through sadhana or spiritual practices. However, any practice has to be done continuously without exception and with respect. Mental tiredness gives rise to the inability to do any practice. Many people do either only Sadhana or only Seva, and Lord Krishna does not spare either. He says, ‘If you work for Me then you will not be tired, this is for sure!’Lord Krishna treats Arjuna as a friend and gives him options saying, ‘If you cant even maintain your practice, then at least be part of Me. Feel total oneness with Me.’ The body, mind and emotions are a result of karma. Good and bad things will happen, but be detached.‘Take refuge in My connection with you, and don’t ever question this relationship.’Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
REVERENCE AND OWNERSHIP
Often you do not have reverence for that which you own.
Whatever you revere becomes bigger than you. When you have reverence in all your relationships then your own consciousness expands. Then even small things appear to be significant and big. Every little creature appears to be dignified. It is the reverence in every relationship that saves the relationship. Often you lose reverence for that which you own, and this happens unconsciously. When you have reverence for the whole universe, you are in harmony with the while universe. Then, you do not need to reject or renounce anything of this universe.Reverence in ownership frees you from greed, jealousy and lust. Cultivate the skill of having reverence every moment in your life.Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
YOU AND OWNERSHIP
Man has a tendency to own things. When he owns something small his mind stays small, his life gets stifled and his whole consciousness is immersed in his house, car, spouse, children and such. A recluse leaves his home and goes far away. There also he starts owning his asana, rosary, books, concepts and his knowledge.
The owning has simply shifted from objects and people to ideas and practices. But a wise one knows that he owns the sun, the moon, the stars, the air, all of space and the Divine in its entirety. When you own something big then your consciousness also expands, and when you own something small then all the small negative emotions start coming up such as anger, greed, etc.I wonder why people do not feel connected to the sun? The very existence of life depends upon the sun. Perhaps it is the lack of awareness that one refuses to acknowledge and own one’s connectedness to the macro-cosmic universe. The Rishis in ancient India, the Native Americans and the aboriginals from all over the globe have insisted that you can feel connection to the sun, moon and the directions. When you own something magnanimous your consciousness also becomes magnanimous.Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
Rudram is a very complex chanting
Q. Gurudev, in the Rudram it is chanted ‘namaste astväyudhäyänätatäya drshnave’. Why do they worship the weapons and the weaponless?
Sri Sri: Rudram is a very complex chanting and a complete chanting. It doesn’t leave anything, any aspect of the existence. It says one who is stable and one who is moving, changing, all the opposites are counted in it; ‘Namotisthadbhyo dhavadbhyascha vo namo namah’; one who is running and one who is stationary, both I adore. So it’s something so unique, the chanting of Rudram. It comprises of all the opposites. And so it’s something that represents the totality. Anything that is under the Sun or above the Sun is all recognized and that’s how Rudram is considered as one of the most sacred of the chants.Q. Gurudev, I had a great yearning to know everything earlier, it’s not that it has vanished, but I can now live without knowing everything. How can I tell if this is contentment or laziness?Sri Sri: When the life force in you is awakened, certain contentment also comes along with that; contentment about every aspect of life. That doesn’t mean you have lost interest. But there is a deep sense of connectedness to the higher self. That can bring this sort of feeling in you, when you feel connected to your higher self. The feverishness or curiosity to some extent vanishes. Because curiosity is not of this being, it is always of the intellect; and practices take you beyond intellect and beyond intellect is where real satisfaction comes to us. And so when there is satisfaction of the expanded nature of our self, just even a glimpse of it would bring certain amount of serenity, contentment and it appears that you are losing that feverishness to know. But it’s not depression or lack of interest or laziness. If any of these things come in then you will also find a sense of heaviness coming over you, mentally, physically, you will feel heavy. This is what Maharishi Patanjali calls as sthana. Sthana as a sort of dullness, heaviness. That is an obstacle in the path of Yoga, but contentment is not an obstacle.Q. Gurudev, I am grateful to be on this path, but I cannot say that I have experienced the highest truth. When it will happen is not clear, by doing what it will happen is also not clear, how do I track my progress on the path?Sri Sri: But this is clear that you want to be on the path or not? Yes. When are you sitting and expecting something to happen to you at some point and what is that you are expecting, this you need to pin point. Most of the time we are so vague in our wanting and when you don’t even know what you really want, then the confusion is obvious. That is what we say you don’t even know what you want. But there is a sense of seeking, emptiness in you and here is where you need to dive into that feeling, dive into that sensation of not knowing what you want. This is diving into the unknown, this is the chance of going deep in the meditation. You feel lonely, you feel lost, when you feel lost, it is a blessing in disguise I tell you. Pull yourself up and sit and ponder on it, what is that. And all this knowledge is there for you to help you to dive into the space.Q. Gurudev, someone that I have worked with, has a strong prejudice against me, because of what they have heard about me. This creates problems in our working relationship. If I try to clarify, I am seen as defensive, how should I deal with this situation? Please guide.Sri Sri: Educate and ignore. You know sometimes it is the glass that you wear that they have prejudice. Nobody’s prejudice can stay for too long. And by your clarification nobody’s prejudice will even go. Best thing from your side what you can do is educate and ignore. And don’t even recognise that they have prejudice against you. You just keep working. Because the moment you think they have prejudice against me, then your reaction or your action gets coloured. Just deal with them as though you are dealing with a new person. It may appear a little strange, to begin with, but later on you will find yourself in a higher plain, in a plateau where you are able to deal with any situation, with anybody. Prejudice is their problem and you will see their prejudice simply dissolve, vanish. But the more you recognise, you are giving energy to that. You should go and just greet them, talk to them as though you don’t even recognise their prejudice. You know in the world there is lot of prejudice about everything. In gender prejudice is there, there’s prejudice about race, religion, and sadhu, sanyasi, guru, big prejudice! One with a beard or look different, then there is prejudice. But we should not recognise those prejudice and give energy to it, it affects our own interaction. We must believe that mind is fluid or is like air, is like gas, it just changes all the time. People’s opinions change, if you recognise this, then you become free and your interaction with them will be normal, like you do with a person who has no prejudice.Q. Gurudev, it’s been a long time since God showed us some visible miracles. The last one was Ganesh Ji drinking milk. Is there something coming up?Sri Sri: Listen, every day, every moment, there are so many miracles, you only need an eye to see it. There is abundance of it in life. Every flower that blossoms are indicating in that direction. Every bird that is chirping. And every behavior of human being, pleasant or unpleasant. It’s all like a miracle. Recognise this, honor this, you will find that your life is filled with it.Q. Gurudev, all relationships seem temporary, they teach us a lesson and then with time they get over. This seems so shallow to me, is there any deep purpose of a relationship?Sri Sri: Then you are very lucky! When you know these, relationships have their own limitations you can have them and not get affected by them, not get drowned in it. When you get drowned in any relationship, you lose your centeredness, you lose your true self. All relationships are like different garments, different coats, different parts, different roles you play in your life. You are much more than all the roles you play. And you are so lucky to know this ‘That I am not just my relationship, but I am more than that’. This opens a new avenue, new dimension in your life. I would say this is the beginning of serenity dawning in life. -
What are the different types of Karma?
There are so many types of Karma and we can broadly classify them as
1. Collective karma2. Karma of the time3. Karma of a place4. Karma of a family5. Karma of an individualThere is individual karma, then you have family karma – what you call DNA. Then comes the karma of a region, state and country. Then there is karma of the time. During the time of World War II, all the people had similar karma and so all over the world there was war. Some karmas yield their fruits immediately, and some take time. For example, if you place your hand in a fire, you will immediately get burnt, right now, not tomorrow or anytime later But if you sow a mango seed today, it will take ten years for it to grow into a tree. You will be able to reap the fruits of the mango tree only after ten years of hard work. In the same way, some karmas yield their fruits almost instantly, while some take time to bear fruit. But do not think that every problem or suffering that you go through is only because of your actions from past lifetimes. Some of it also comes because of the foolishness and ignorance you have in the present lifetime also.To free yourself from the results of past actions, you should regularly practice your sadhana. It definitely helps to nullify the bad influences of the past karmas. But at the same time, we should act with intelligence as well. That is why Lord Krishna said,’Gahana Karmano Gatih’. You cannot fathom the depth of karma.Don’t try to analyze karma. Just do your duty and move on. Keep moving ahead with love in your heart and with prayer in your heart.Just drop everything and just become a Sharanagati. Being a Sharanagati means to have this firm faith and belief that all your Karmas have been cleansed. There is no balance that remains to be cleared anymore.Whether the action is from a past life, or something done 10 years back, or done just yesterday, or even 10 minutes back – it really does not matter. Ultimately, all Karma is Karma, that’s it. That is why it is said that the ways of Karma are mysterious and unfathomable.Knowing that this is what it is, you move beyond that.It is only knowledge which can take you beyond Karma. You cannot understand the depth of karma, it is so vast. Know that you have the power to do it and just do it. Open your mind to the vastness of this universe.Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
How can you get more grace in life?
Anugraha means grace. Nothing is possible in life without anugraha.
When you receive a lot without making efforts for it, then it is said that you are blessed with anugraha.Usually you work hard at your job and then receive your salary. So you say, ‘I have earned my money’. But if someone gives you a gift, you do not say, ‘I have earned these gifts’. Can something that is earned be called a gift? No. You receive gifts without any efforts. So when you receive a great gift or an award that you feel you did not deserve, then that is called anugraha. When we receive something that we are not deserving of, or which exceeds our capabilities, then that is what is called Grace. When we see that in our life, we have received far more than what we deserve or are capable of, then gratitude dawns in us. We become thankful, complaints disappear and abundance grows.A person who is grateful never experiences lack of anything.Who experiences a lack in life? One who thinks that ‘I am so capable yet I get nothing’.Being grateful means all your complaints in life simply disappear. When you have this feeling in your heart that you have always received more than what you asked for, or more than what you deserved, then deep gratitude arises in you. When there is gratitude, there will never be a lack of anything in life. For such a person, whatever he wishes for will keep getting fulfilled. Now you might say that this is quite difficult. Yes, it is difficult. It is never easy to achieve something. But when you take one step towards this, you will find that it is very easy.Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
Everything manifests when you meditate!
Divine and worldly dispensation are one and the same, they are not discrete. God is inseparable from this world. He is all permeating. Sarvam khalvidam Brahma – All of this is Brahman.
If you stick your hand in a fire, you get burnt instantly. However, if you sow a mango seed or a coconut seed, in the ground, it takes 4-6 years to bear fruit. Similarly, there are some actions whose consequences are immediate and there are some actions with a delayed outcome. If your grandfather/forefather toils for 20 years to set up a factory, who will enjoy the fruits of his labour – you will! Applying the same logic, karma and its consequences are eternal and beyond comprehension. Some karma can be resolved only by dealing with the consequences, whereas the outcome of some karma can be modified / modulated. For example, while preparing a meal, the proportion of ingredients can be adjusted with respect to one another. However, once cooked it cannot be reverted back to its uncooked state. Similarly, what your height is today is praarabdha karma(karma that cannot be changed), but your current body-weight can be changed (reduced/increased). That is why doing dhyaan (meditation), japa(chanting), havan(sacrificial fire), daan (charity) helps in changing your karma.Having an attitude of gratefulness for all that we have received in life also resolves karma. Do not criticize or condemn anyone. However, on the path of Self-knowledge forget about your sins and merits, and just relax and be happy. The more relaxed we are, the more spontaneously (naturally) things get done. When we were building the ashram, I did not seek advice from a Vaastu consultant. Several years later, some Vaastu specialists commented on how all structures were in their proper place with respect to one another. Our consciousness itself is Shaastra, so if we listen to our consciousness, our intuition, we will function in accord with nature.Suppose you have no knowledge of electronics, but you need to tackle an electronics issue, you intuitively play around with the wires, and eventually the problem gets resolved. Many people have experienced this. Once I was going from London to Birmingham where I was scheduled to give a talk. This happened more than twenty years ago. Birmingham is a big city. One gentleman realized an hour after we had left London that he had forgotten to obtain the address or the directions to the venue in Birmingham. There were no cell phones then. So I decided to intuitively guide him, telling him to take this turn here and that turn there, until we reached the street in Birmingham on which the venue was located!Shaastra is not a book, you yourself are the Shaastras. If you study your consciousness, your mind, that is what is in the Shaastra. This is how the knowledge of Vaastu Shaastra, Ayurveda, etc came into being. Dance, music, art, science, have all emerged from the consciousness of the spirit, through meditation. So meditation is supreme.Everything manifests when you meditate. In english it is known as intuition. Intuition means that which is ‘right’. This power is within everyone.Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
8 qualities of a Yogi from Gurudev's commentary on Bhagavad Gita
- He who sees inaction in action and action in inaction, he is wise among men, and he is a yogi, an accomplisher of everything.
2. A yogi considers even his work as a game, so be a yogi. Yogi means ‘one who does things in perfection.’ Every little thing he does will be perfect because he has that equanimity of mind. Only when you consider your work as a game can you ever be detached about whether it is going to be successful or not. It doesn’t matter anyway.3. You have an intention or a desire and your mind and your life are running in that direction. When you drop this, then you become a yogi, then awareness, knowledge and wisdom dawn.4. If a person acts without being feverish about the fruit of the action, not dependent on the outcome of the action that person is the real renunciate. He is a yogi. A yogi is not one who has just dropped everything and is sitting in the Himalayas.5. Not knowing what is going to happen, keeps you in anxiety and stress. Not minding what is going to happen, give your hundred percent. That is the action of a yogi.6. One who rests in the inner happiness, in the inner space, immersed in the inner light -that yogi attains the Highest, here and hereafter.7. A yogi should be a close friend. Whether it is someone who hates you or who is indifferent to you or someone with whom you relate well to, who is related to you, or is a saint or a sinner -a yogi sees them all as the same, with equanimity.8. A yogi is one who has a balance of activity and rest.Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
What Is Gupt Daan?
In India, there is something called as Gupt Daan, which means a secret gift. It is when you donate or give someone something without telling anyone that you are giving. You don’t want your name to be put on the name plate which says that so and so donated this. When you quietly give, it is called Gupt Daan.It is often said, “When the right hand gives, the left hand should also not know.” This should be the intention behind donation. People used to take pride in this. You should also take pride in the same thing. At least some time or another, do some service for which you are not expecting any return or recognition. This act brings you so much joy. Once you get the taste of such purely service, you will find it so blissful, so interesting that you will want to go for it again and again. So, every now and then, do some service without wanting any recognition for it.For the other things that you do, it is quite natural to want recognition. You do some good work in your office and you want recognition, there is nothing wrong in that. When you find real fulfillment in life, you feel so contented, then you don’t mind whether someone recognizes you or not. You keep doing what is good for you.Why we must shareWe must share what we have. When you give to those who are in need, the relief they experience brings you merits. If you wipe out suffering where ever you find it, you will earn good karma – sharing brings you merit. Do not think about your sins, keep on giving. And the receiver should take it thinking that it is God who is giving them. If one takes something with a thought of returning it back, then it becomes a burden. How to deal with those who begTo make a profession out of begging is not a good thing. Sometimes, when certain people are able to make money without any effort, they continue begging. Why would they worry about changing that profession? Begging should not be promoted. Yes, if you find some old people or handicapped people, then you should help them, but those who are strong and fit and are begging on the streets, are often quite not in need! People who have strength, who can do something, they should not be given a single cent or single rupee.Back in the time of Buddha or Krishna, it was a different thing altogether. In those days, begging was done by students who would beg for food, or monks who were busy working for society the whole day and would go and beg for food. They needed very little food and would go to peoples’ houses and eat. In those days, people would feed the monks as they were doing good work for the society. Our scriptures also say that one should donate only to the deserving. Give onto to those who deserve what you are giving.Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
What happens when you find it difficult to attain what you are attracted to?
Usually when we love something, we want to possess it. If you appreciate a painting, you want to buy it and keep it in your home. You find a beautiful garment, and although you know you will wear it only a couple of times, you buy it and put it in the closet. You have known only one way of loving — love it, possess it and forget it. When you try to possess love, you rob it of its beauty, and then that same love gives you pain. Whoever you love, you try to dictate terms to them. In a very subtle way you try to rule them. And whatever you try to control turns ugly.
You have never loved someone and not tried to possess them.It begins in childhood. When the second baby comes, the first baby wants all the attention. “Why did you bring this baby home? Give it away.” Many children say,”You belong to me and me alone.” It is a deep samskara, a deep impression, this fear of losing our place in the heart of someone we love.First comes attraction. When it becomes a little difficult to attain whatever you are attracted to, then you start loving…Have you noticed this? If you simply get whatever you are attracted to — just like that, quickly — you do not develop love for it. A longing must arise. That leads to love. But love brings the fear of loss. Yet, a love which has the fear of loss does not blossom. It leads you to other ugly sensations and feelings. Jealousy comes. There is someone you love very much — a friend, a boyfriend, a girlfriend — but his or her attention is on someone else. See what is happening in your stomach — it is churning. You try all sorts of gimmicks to deny what is happening within you. Much ugliness arises because there is fear of loss. You never love something that is big, that is enormous because you have not yet become enormous yourself. And as long as you stay very small, there is no joy, there is no happiness, there is no peace. Joy is expansion, becoming big in your heart. This can only happen in a situation where you are very much in love, but you cannot possess what you love.Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
The Best Kept Secret To Getting What You Want
The association of a particular sense object over and over again creates a sense of craving for it. If you are used to drinking coffee every morning, then even though you are not born with a coffee fervor you have begun a habit within you that has created a craving. How did it all start? The habit of drinking coffee didn’t happen in one day! Addiction starts with a repeated experience of a particular object. It becomes a habit — and the nature of habit is that it does not give you joy. It gives pain. Therefore, drinking coffee will not carry you to heaven but if you don’t have it, it can give you hell!
The repeated experience or association of a particular sense object makes you want it more. You think about it — and it creates a sensation of more wanting. Wherever you put your attention in the nervous system, the craving for that begins. With association comes desire. And with desire comes anger. Whenever a person is angry, behind that anger is a desire. Whether fulfilled or unfulfilled, desire leads to anger. So you get angry with somebody. The next step is that you get attached. Now, whoever you are angry with, sooner or later you will regret. Regret brings more attachment. By regretting, you do not move away from the person or situation, you move more into it. All this happens in a subtle way. Have you ever observed that whoever you are angry with or hate, you think of that person more than yourself? And as you think of this person, you get agitated or distressed. On the other hand, if you think of someone you love, you have a nice feeling and your nervous system assumes that form. When your nervous system assumes either of the forms, it becomes like that & you get drawn to those kind of people. This is entanglement. Therefore, an obsession brings anger which in turn brings entanglement. Entanglement clouds your intellect. Your wisdom & judgment are lost; your ability to understand and access the situation is lost. This is a chain reaction and it happens in such a subtle manner that you don’t even realize it.Entanglement, whether out of craving or aversion, clouds the intellect. And a distorted intellect doesn’t let you be in peace. Such an intellect does not even bring up the emotions — the subtle feelings within you. Any feeling you get will be gross and will make you heavy. With a clouded intellect, the memory of pleasant things is lost. Life has two sets of memories: memories of pleasant things & memories of unpleasant things. Children often have pleasant memories more than the unpleasant ones. That’s why they are so cheerful. But as we grow up & lose our innocence, our unpleasant memories increase.Spiritual practices help bring back the pleasant memories more & more, and reduce unpleasant memories to almost an insignificant amount. Therefore, it is important to meditate regularly. Once the memory of “Who am I” is lost, the memory of “What do I want in my life,” the “reality” & “seeing life in context with the universe” is lost, wisdom is lost. Then there is no happiness & peace. The role of meditation & other spiritual practices is to withdraw the mind from the sense objects and take it back to its source. This is critical for success in life. The knowledge of coming back to the Self, the self-referral value of consciousness makes it rich, energetic & beautiful.Pull back your attention from the object of the senses to the senses, and then to the source of mind. This journey within will give you the strength and endurance to go through all the ups and downs of life.Wherever you put your attention, that will start manifesting in your life.If you put attention on anger, anger will manifest. If you put attention on lust, lust will manifest.Focus on love & love manifests. Focus on imperfection, imperfection manifests.Observe the intention, and put your attention on whatever you want to grow in life. Intention, attention and manifestation — that is how the universe manifests.Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
The Best Form of Donation
What is donation?
To give people what they need is donation, not what you feel like giving. If you donate clothes to somebody who already have many clothes, it is of no use. Instead give clothes to people who need clothes. Similarly giving food to somebody who owns a restaurant is foolishness. But give food to hungry and clothes to people who need them. This is donation. There is a story. Once everybody – Gods, Demons and Humans went to Prajapati (the lord of creatures). They asked him for something. He said, “Da Da Da.”And then he told them to explain the meaning. All three decoded different meanings. To the demon it meant to have compassion (daya) because demons lack compassion. To humans it meant donation (daan). Give what you have as donation. For Gods it meant suppression (daman). Daman means to control the senses. This is the story. So, it is important donate to people who need it, not to those who don’t need it. If you donate a cow to a poor man who can’t feed himself, how will he feed the cow? If you donate a dictionary to a man who is illiterate, what will he do with it? Only give to those who deserve it!Why must we donate?People are ready to buy expensive clothes for themselves, people are ready to spend a huge amount on their holidays, but they are not ready to give one cent to others for a service project. At least 3 percent of what we earn, we should keep aside for charity work. This converts the 97% percent of your earnings into good money. If you want to use 100% on yourself then that is no good! If the money needs to be pure, it can only be 97% or less (laughs). You are free to use 97% on yourself, but 3% to 5%, you should keep aside for donation. This is because whatever you earn is never enough for yourself! You ask anyone, they all feel, “Oh, there’s shortage.” Everyone finds a shortage. So it is not wise to say, “First I will do everything for me and then I will donate to others.” We have to do both. It is collective growth that we must aim for.The best form of donationGenerosity or sharing what we have with those around us is a divine quality. There are different types of donations:Food is the foundation of life. Hence donating food is no doubt good. If you are not able to do it daily, then do it once in a while. You may donate food on your birthday, or in remembrance of your ancestors. That is why all these rules were instilled into our culture. Especially in India, anna daanam (donation of food) has been there for ages.Though it is said “Anna daanam param daanam, vidya daanam atah param.annena kshanika trupthi, yaavat jeevancha vidyeya.” Which means that donating food is the best donation, donating knowledge is the best among the best kinds of donation. Food can satisfy one’s hunger for a short time, but with knowledge, one can be lifelong satisfied.“Sarveshaamevadaanamm brahmadaanam vishishyati.” Furthermore, sharing knowledge of Brahman (supreme consciousness or Divine) is even superior to that.If you are not doing any donation, then do the basic first. Begin with donation of food.Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
Is Buddhism a Part of Hinduism
It is up to people how they think. Here in India, Buddhism is considered a part of Hindu tradition because Buddha never said I am starting a new religion – he only reformed what was already existed.
Buddha became a monk in the Hindu tradition and then he gave monkhood for everybody. He never discarded the Gods or Goddess. He put the Buddha (the enlightened) first, that was already here. The Guru Comes FirstIn Hinduism, we chant, Guru Brahma Gurur Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwaraha, Guru Saakshat Para Brahma, Tasmai Sree Gurave Namaha.Which means, first is the Guru – Buddha reestablished this same thing. Instead of Guru, he said Buddha. Buddha means a totally blossomed enlightened person. Here in Karnataka, all Gurus were called Buddhi. If you go to any ashram and say Buddhi, it is addressed to Guru. Buddhi also means heightened intellect or the great enlightened. So at that time, enlightened people were called Buddha. And he gave renunciation (Sanyasa) and how it was being followed.May All People Be HappyThe next thing which is said in Buddhism is, “Rakhantu sabba devta, bhavtu sabba Mangalam.” This means, let auspiciousness and peace happen to everybody. In the Vedas it is said, “Sarve jana sukhino Bhavantu”, which means, let all the people of the world be happy.Whatever is said in Upanishad, the same thing Buddha spoke! Buddha never said that all the Rishis or saints were wrong. He said there will be so many Buddhas before me and many after me. Take refuge in Buddha. And there is a Buddha hiding inside of you. Take refuge in the Buddha nature inside you.Hinduism is the Mother of BuddhismVirtually there is no difference. Even his Holiness Dalai Lama, he always says, Hinduism is our mother. Hinduism is the mother of Buddhism. In earlier days, people would do animal sacrifices, and Buddha condemned all that. He said you should not do this sacrifice. In any religion, there is always some such interpolation. Though it was not the original practice of the religion, later on, these things get into the religion. And then people think this is the religion. They leave the philosophy and hold on to the practices. That is the cause of contention and then sects develop.Even in Buddhism, there are Hinayana and Mahayana. Buddha never created Hinayana and Mahayana. There are 32 sects of Buddhism, all mushroomed later on. Which is the one Buddha created? He did not create them at all. He just reformed what was already in practice. Monks were wearing saffron in this country, he wore the same thing. Monks were shaving their head, he asked all his monks to shave their head. So everything in Hinduism like going for alms and asking for food, to letting go of the ego, Buddha followed the same thing.Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
How to be happy when you are lonely?
Ques: How to be happy when you are lonely?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:You should feel the freedom! (Laughter from the audience) Look at the birds, how they fly. What is lonely? When there is nobody to bug you, nobody to ask you where did you go? What did you do? Whom did you look at? No control, no obligation, nothing! It is like being a free bird, just jump around like a bird. You want to put some music on and dance, do it!What do you mean by lonely? Just having a partner does not take away your loneliness, mind you! There are millions of people who have partners, soul mates, who have fallen in love and married the same person, and yet they feel lonely! Many may not come out and tell you honestly, but if you ask the ideal couples, “Tell me one secret, do you ever feel lonely or anything like that?” They will say, “Yes!” The only people who don’t feel lonely are the ones who are connected with the being, with the self. One who is established in the self feels no loneliness. Only spiritual elevation can take away the loneliness, not soul mates. -

Why Vegetarianism Is Preferred in Spirituality
There are many benefits to being vegetarian. If you run a search on Google, you will find plenty of research available on this topic. Otherwise, the world would not take to it so promptly. A few decades ago, vegetarian food was not available in Berlin and many parts of Europe. Today, Berlin is the vegan capital of Germany. Veganism has grown exponentially in Europe, America, and India.
If you look back, some of the greatest thinkers of this world, like Einstein, have been vegetarian. If you take a stock of how many great scientists and thinkers on this planet were vegetarian, you will find a large number of them were. So, somewhere, being vegetarian has a connection with the way the mind works.A vegetarian diet enhances mental refinementAccording to our ancients, vegetarian food is important, especially for people doing mental work. If you are doing only menial work, it is okay to be on a non-vegetarian diet. But if you are intellectual, and want to have a more refined thinking and a subtler experience, then you need to tweak your diet accordingly. And such a diet must not just be vegetarian, but it is also preferable to avoid pungent, stale, and old food. Such is a dietary prescription for someone who wants a heightened consciousness.A vegetarian diet keeps your system attuned to natureEven in the Bible, on one of the lost scrolls, there is a lot of talk about being vegetarian. But over time, for whatever reason, it has been shoved aside. So, the choice to be vegetarian or not is yours. I am not saying you cannot do meditation if you are not a vegetarian. But the most preferred diet is vegetarian, since it keeps your system attuned to your own nature. The human body is made for a vegetarian dietOur immediate ancestors, the monkeys, are vegetarians. There is a substance called Talvin in our saliva, which is only present in the saliva of herbivores. If you were meant to be carnivorous, your teeth and enzymes would be different. Talvin, which is only found in herbivorous animals, would not be in your saliva.A horse is vegetarian; have you ever seen it eating meat? Elephant, the most powerful among animals, is vegetarian. Do you see, the most domesticated animals are all vegetarians – mostly! Yes, cats would eat rats, and dogs are different, but look at cows, sheep, etc.You should look into the mechanics. Our human system is made for vegetarianism! Vegetarian animals have long intestines, which is not the case for carnivorous animals. Your intestine is taller than you; you have a 6-foot-long intestine, all coiled up. If you were meant to be carnivorous, your intestine would have been half the size, only 3 feet long. All this indicates somewhere that the diet most suited for you is vegetarian.Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
Ways to clear your mind of negative thoughts
Get Busy
When you recognize a negative thought, get busy. If you simply sit, you will keep thinking a lot.Improve circulation in your bodyIf your head is filled with too many thoughts, lie down on the floor and keep rolling and you will see the circulation in the body improves. When circulation improves then the mind feels better. That is the reason they do shayana pradakshinam (a form of worship done by rolling on the floor). Experience it and see how there is a change in your mind.Shake hands with negative thoughtsIf you keep resisting negative thoughts, and try to push them away, then they will follow you like a ghost. Shake hands with your negative thoughts. Tell them, ‘Come here and sit with me. I will not leave you’, and you will see how they quickly disappear. Thoughts are scared of you.If you get scared of negative thoughts then they will control you. But if you shake hands with them, then they will disappear.Pranayama and MeditationPranayama and Meditation is the best way to apply brakes in the buzzing mind.It is very effective and instantly calms your mind down.Intestinal Cleansingif you are bombarded with too many negative thoughts, know that something must be wrong with your bowel movement. Do Shankh Prakshalan (intestinal cleansing). That would also help.Move AroundGet up, do your exercise, sing, dance, do yoga, meditation, pranayama; all these will help.Become a witness to your thoughtsYou cannot stop a thought or know a thought before it comes. And when it comes, it also goes away immediately. If you are a witness to the thought, it simply drifts away and vanishes. But if you hold on to it and chew on it, then it stays with you.Thoughts come and go, but that which is the basis of thoughts – is the atma (soul). And that is what you are. You are like the sky, and thoughts are like clouds. This could be the nearest example one can give. Clouds come and go in the sky, but can they disturb or limit the vastness of the sky in any way? No, not at all.So when you fly above the clouds, when you go beyond the clouds, you see that the sky is untouched. It is the same, it is unchanged. It is only the thoughts which keep moving. This is what happens in meditation. When you come into Sakshi bhaav, i.e., when you simply become a witness to the thoughts. We do not have to attach ourselves to the thoughts. That is foolishness. Whether they are good thoughts, or bad thoughts – they come and go. You are far above and beyond all this. This is called the Vihangam Maarg – it means rising above thoughts and seeing that you have nothing to do with these moving thoughts.Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
How to Overcome Inner Conflict
A Great Warrior
The word great warrior refers to a man with valor and is usually said to the people who fight in the world and win over their enemies. But, one who sits still, one who follows the path of ‘ahimsa’ or non-violence totally, is also called a great warrior. In the word Mahaveer, veer means warrior, and the word warrior comes from the Sanskrit root veera. Mahaveer (a great warrior) is a title given not only to people who fight, win and succeed, but also to people who are in deep meditation. How can someone who is non-violent and who meditates be called a great warrior? There is turmoil in the inner world (referring to the mind) as much as there is turmoil in the outer world. There are more conflicts inside you than what you find outside in the world. When you can win over this turmoil inside, be still and keep smiling, then you are a great warrior. The world is made up of five elements and they are all in conflict; conflict is their nature. Fire and water are never friendly; fire evaporates water and water extinguishes fire. Similarly, air can put off fire and it is only because of air that fire can exist, and it is fire that can split air. And, Earth is affected by all the three elements; fire, water and air.Similarly, there is conflict world over. Inside you, the heart and mind are in a conflict. The heart is compassionate but the mind is logical and reasons everything. When the mind says, “This is right to do”, the heart doesn’t want to do it. When the heart wants to do something, the mind says, “This is no good”. The fight between mind and heart, likes and dislikes bother you. These are storms that get created inside you that don’t let your mind be at peace.Worry, conflict, sadness, unhappiness, all these emotions pose a great challenge for meditation to happen and do not let you be at peace. When you are peaceful and happy for few moments, something comes up and it destroys your peace. There are hundred and one reasons for you to be miserable, and if you’re not intelligent, your mind makes up thousand and one reasons to be unhappy. Sometimes you are unhappy because there is conflict, and sometimes you are unhappy just because you have lost your peace of mind. This continues throughout life. How to win over inner conflict? In meditation, a million things can come up, but if you raise your head above all these conflicts, and feel unmindful of it, not questioning why they have come, it makes you go deep in your meditation. By thinking why these bad thoughts are coming, you are bringing party to the conflict, and this makes you weak. Let them come and go. Think that you have nothing to do with it. This is the strategy to win over inner conflict. When inner conflict arises, this strategy is there to remind you that you are much more powerful and much bigger than the conflict. Then you rise above it, flying above the clouds, piercing through them and reaching the clear sky.Sit still in your inner space, unmindful of any conflict, any thought or emotion. If they come, let them come and go, and when you think, “I don’t care about how I feel”, then that will give you the strength. You have to stand up against the inner conflict and fight it. The world doesn’t care how you feel; the world is only interested in what you have done and what you are doing. One day you may feel good and another day you may not feel so good. Feelings go up and down but the world will only ask you, “What good have you done, and how have you contributed to the world?”When we get into this complex emotional turmoil, so much time and money is wasted. If people get over this emotional turbulence, if they don’t succumb to it and waste time, the world would be a much better place, and we can save trillions of dollars. In any relationship, be the giver of strength. This you can do only when you are strong. And meditation will give you that much needed strength.Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
How To Develop Virtues?
You are the source of all virtues
As human beings we have tremendous qualities and virtues. You don’t have to look for virtues outside – you are the source of all virtues. But in the stress of day to day life, these virtues get hidden.A seed has a membrane around it which doesn’t allow the seed to sprout, but when the membrane is soaked in water and it gets the right atmosphere, the membrane loosens and the seed sprouts. That is how the seed becomes a tree. Sadhana is a way to soak the seed; Yoga is a way to manifest all the perfections that are already within you.Virtues get covered by 3 things:1. MalaMala is impurities. If there are toxins in your body, it reflects on your mind and affects your behavior. Impurities of the body and mind are called mala. You get a lot of negative thoughts if your bowel movements are not okay. If you have constipation, the impact of it on the mind is sure negativity. Anyone who says I have constipation, know for sure that they are going to have negative thoughts sooner or later because the toxins in the body are increasing and it is going to affect the brain too. This is called Mala, or the first sheath that covers your beautiful being.2. AvarnaAvarna is a veil of ignorance that surrounds you through identification. There is a saying in English that as you sow so shall you reap. You have sown the seeds. You have put the labels on you – I am so bad, or I am weak, or I am hopeless, or I am arrogant. Whatever label you put creates a sheath around you. Avarna is a veil which has come from many lifetimes.3. VikshepaWhen you put wrong concepts about yourself in your mind, or form wrong concepts based on what you hear from others that causes disturbance in you is called vikshepa.Your interaction with people can create mental disturbances. Just one person, whom you are friendly with, tells you some news and that news can disturb your mind. It can throw you off normal. And later, after 1 or 2 months, you come to know from your friend that what you heard is not true, but by that time it has already caused so much restlessness or agitation in your mind. So vikshepa is agitation getting created in your mind by hearsay or opinions of other people. So these 3 things keep you shrouded and limited. Meditation and yoga can help you come out of all this, and that is when you have full enthusiasm, energy, joy and all virtues coming up.A touch of positivitySatsang can also help you come out of vikshepa and wrong indoctrination that gets into our head. Satsang brings positivity. Then when someone comes and tells you this guy is a hopeless guy and you say, “Ok, so what!” You don’t get affected by that. Otherwise if someone says this guy is a hopeless guy, you say, “Oh yes, he is a hopeless guy. I believed in this guy and I went to tea with him and gave him money…” and this way the mind goes on. So, satsang takes you out and gives you a positive attitude.Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
What Is Hinduism?
A Way of Life
Hinduism means universalism; it is not just a sect. The president of India Dr. Radha Krishan was asked, “Who is a Hindu?”He said, “By negating all the religions, that is, one who is not a Muslim, one who is not a Christian and so on, whoever is left is a Hindu.”So, all those who accept everything, are Hindus. It is very difficult to define a way of life as a religion. A way of humanism is really what Hinduism is. It does not force you to follow just one scripture, one book, or one ritual per say. It simply says that the world is a family, accept knowledge from every side. Realize yourself and serve others. This is the principle.A Way of Honoring Diversity and FreedomWhen I was in America, I was talking to some people about the constitution of America. It is exactly what Hinduism is – honoring diversity, freedom of worship, liberty, and justice to all. The whole philosophy is what Hinduism is.This universe is versatile; there are so many dimensions and so many ways to go to the one truth. That is exactly what the essence of Hinduism is.Reviving the Self-esteem of HinduismUnfortunately, in this country the self-esteem of Hinduism has gone down so much. In the colonial era, they suffered a lot. So the self-esteem and prestige went down. It is only during Mahatma Gandhi’s time, or little before, when Swami Vivekananda tried to reestablish the pride of the Hindus in their culture and religion, that things are better.Lord Macaulay, when he went to London, he wrote to Queen Elizabeth, saying, “I have travelled the length and breadth of India, and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, or a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such caliber, that I do not think we could ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage.”He wrote this letter. It is a very famous talk that he gave in the British parliament. After that they systematically destroyed the Indian culture. He said that people should think that they are no good, and they were successful in doing that. In the 40’s and 50’s people started thinking this way – anything from India is not good. Now times are changing, we simply have to tell people that this country had some very good things and some bad things also, like every other country because our culture has been interpolated by things which are not good. This lack of self-esteem needs serious attention because there is no one big authority. Hinduism is just a way of life. It has its advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantage is that you cannot bring uniformity. On the other hand, the advantage is that it has a lot of scope for growth.Religion alone is not enough – the spiritual aspect is needed to regain the self-esteem and prestige.Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
How to achieve perfection? A great secret revealed by Ashtavakra to Janaka
Tānyupekshya yathāprāptavartī siddhimavāpnuyāt.
Contentment, perfection and siddhī dawns in that person who is happy and contented with whatever has come; who does not hanker for something more. It is so strange, and yet very true! Be contented with what you have and you will see perfection or siddhī dawning in you. If you hanker for siddhī, you will not attain it. You may think you will be fulfilled and satisfied when you have siddhī. But it’s the other way around. When you are satisfied, you will get siddhī. You may think that achievements follow siddhī(perfection), i.e. when you get fulfilled then you will achieve. Or when you achieve something, then you will be fulfilled. But Ashtāvakra says, ‘Be satisfied now’. Achievements will dawn in you. Siddhī(perfection) will dawn in you. He was revealing a big secret to Janaka. Be satisfied and perfection will dawn. You will become a siddha. You cannot ever achieve siddhī by your hankering, your restlessness. Be happy with what you have. Your hankering is always for what you don’t have. And there will always be something you will not have. So your hankering has a continuum and, thus, there is a postponement of your perfection. Ashtāvakra says that by dropping the hankering and being fulfilled and satisfied, perfection will come rushing to you!Krishna said the same, that when you are fulfilled then all the desires and their fulfillment, and their achievements will flow towards you, just as all the rivers flow into the ocean. And this is our practical experience! Just look at your life. Take one step back and look at your life. Has this not happened?Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -

Disease, mental laziness, doubt, carelessness, laziness , non-abstention , false perception , failing to obtain stages of practice and inability to stay in that state – These distractions of the mind are the impediments.
Verse 30
व्याधि स्त्यान संशय प्रमादाअलस्याविरति भ्रान्तिदर्शनालब्धभूमिकत्वानवस्थितत्वानि चित्तविक्षेपाः ते अन्तरायाः ॥३०॥vyādhi styāna saṁśaya pramāda-ālasya-avirati bhrāntidarśana-alabdha-bhūmikatva-anavasthitatvāni citta-vikṣepāḥ te antarāyāḥ ॥30॥Disease, mental laziness, doubt, carelessness, laziness , non-abstention , false perception , failing to obtain stages of practice and inability to stay in that state – These distractions of the mind are the impediments. These nine types of obstacles usually prevent the meditators from progressing on the path of Yoga. The souls who did not have strong previous birth sanskaras surely face it but they should not leave yoga fearing these problems. In fact, yoga should be practised continuously.Maharshi has organized these obstacles in a chronological order which is quite scientific. In case the meditator is suffering from a disease then he cannot sit for yoga practice and he will be distracted due to unwellness of his heart. So, disease is called the first obstacle by the Maharshi. Therefore, good health is the foremost requirement to take the first step on the path of yoga.So the first obstacle should always be focused upon in order to work hard to overcome other obstacles too. You will not be able to cross the other hurdles if you are unable to walk the path of yoga. You may reach your destination one day if you continue the journey, but those who have not even started their journey will be lost. Therefore, it is very important that we either overcome the first hurdle on the path of yoga or do not let it appear. The remaining 8 obstacles are related to body, boastfulness, intellect, ignorance etc. These can be removed with internal effort, understanding, practice, detachment and wisdom. But the yogic meditators will have to constantly remember that we have to work hard to stay away from the first obstacle/disease to yoga. The other 8 obstacles will become mild due to the meditator’s efforts made for total physical health. Meaning thereby, if the efforts for physical health are made with full concentration, then the other 8 obstacles will also get removed.Complete physical health also includes dietary habits, thoughts, day to day behavior, samskaras and habits.PATANJALI YOGA SUTRAS -
From that comes realization of the Individual Self and the destruction of obstacles.
Verse 29
ततः प्रत्यक्चेतनाधिगमोऽप्यन्तरायाभवश्च ॥२९॥tataḥ pratyak-cetana-adhigamo-‘py-antarāya-abhavaś-ca ॥29॥From that comes realization of the Individual Self and the destruction of obstacles.PATANJALI YOGA SUTRAS -
When repeating this and meditating on the Pranava one can become one with the ultimate.
Verse 28
तज्जपः तदर्थभावनम् ॥२८॥taj-japaḥ tad-artha-bhāvanam ॥28॥The repetition of this (OM-Pranava) and meditating on its meaning is the way.Om kara. Ishwara is OM is what Patanjali says.To go deeper the manifestation process is from moola – Pranava – prana – jeeva. This is how the manifestation of world occurs. And here Patanjali stresses o meditation on Pranava. Pranava is underlying reality the background vibration of this existence. When repeating this and meditating on the Pranava one can become one with the ultimate. In Verse 28, Patanjali lays emphasis on the repetition and meditation on this Pranava mantra i.e. Aum.Why should there be repetition? We have not forgotten that theory of Samskaras, that the sum-total of impressions lives in the mind. Impressions live in the mind, the sum-total of impressions, and they become more and more latent, but remain there, and as soon as they get the right stimulus they come out. Molecular vibration will never cease. When this universe is destroyed all the massive vibrations disappear, the sun, moon, stars, and earth, will melt down, but the vibrations must remain in the atoms. Each atom will perform the same function as the big worlds do. So the vibrations of this Chitta will subside, but will go on like molecular vibrations, and when they get the impulse will come out again. We can now understand what is meant by repetition. It is the greatest stimulus that can be given to the spiritual Samskaras. “One moment of company with the Holy makes a ship to cross this ocean of life.” Such is the power of association. So this repetition of Om, and thinking of its meaning, is keeping good company in your own mind. Study, and then meditate and meditate, when you have studied. The light will come to you, the Self will become manifest. But one must think of this Om, and of its meaning too. Avoid evil company, because the scars of old wounds are in you, and this evil company is just the heat that is necessary ot call them out. In the same way we are told that good company will call out the good impressions that are in us, but which have become latent. There is nothing holier in this world than to keep good company, because the good impressions will have this same tendency to come to the surface.PATANJALI YOGA SUTRAS -
The word to designate Him (Isvara) is Pranava or OM.
Verse 27
तस्य वाचकः प्रणवः ॥२७॥tasya vācakaḥ praṇavaḥ ॥27॥The word to designate Him (Isvara) is Pranava or OM.In the verse 27, Sage Patanjali is stressing on the Ishvara and the symbol, the mark of His, i.e. Aum.Symbol is the manifestor of the thing signified, and if the thing signified has already existence, and if, by experience, we know that the symbol has expressed that thing many times, then we are sure that there is the real relation between them. Even if the things are not present, there will be thousands who will know them by their symbols. There must be a natural connection between the symbol and the thing signified; then, when that symbol is pronounced, it recalled the thing signified.Patanjali says the manifesting word of God is Om. Why does he emphasize this? There are hundreds of words for God. One thought is connected with a thousand words; the idea, God, is connected with hundreds of words, and each one stands as a symbol for God.But there must be a generalization among all these words, some substratum, some common ground of all these symbols, and that symbol, which is the common symbol will be the best, and will really be the symbol of all. In making a sound we use the larynx, and the palate as a sounding board. Is there any material sound of which all other sounds must be manifestations, one which is the most natural sound? Om (Aum) is such a sound, the basis of all sounds. The first letter, A, is the root sound, the key, pronounced without touching any part of the tongue or palate; M represents the last sound in the series, being produced by the closed lip, and the U rolls from the very root to the end of the sounding board of the mouth. Thus, Om represents the whole phenomena of sound producing. As such, it must be the natural symbol, the matrix of all the variant sounds. It denotes the whole range and possibility of all the words that can be made. Apart from these speculations we see that around this word Om are centered all the different religious ideas in India; all the various religious ideas of the Vedas have gathered themselves round this word Om.PATANJALI YOGA SUTRAS -
Patanjali is talking about Omniscience of Ishvara and His significance in attaining the Yoga.
Verse 26
स एष पूर्वेषामपिगुरुः कालेनानवच्छेदात् ॥२६॥sa eṣa pūrveṣām-api-guruḥ kālena-anavacchedāt ॥26॥That (Isavara) is the Teacher of even the ancient teachers, since He is not limited by time.In these verses, Sage Patanjali is talking about Omniscience of Ishvara and His significance in attaining the Yoga.In verse 26, Ishvara is called as the Adi-Guru, the Adi-Yogi. It is true that all knowledge is within ourselves, but this has to be called forth by another knowledge. Although the capacityto know is inside us, it must be called out, and that calling out of knowledge can only be got, a Yogi maintains, through another knowledge. Dead, insentient matter, never calls outknowledge. It is the action of knowledge that brings out knowledge. Knowing beings must be with us to call forth what is in us, so these teachers were always necessary. The world was never without them, and no knowledge can come without them. God is the Teacher of all teachers, because these teachers, however great they may have been—gods or angels—were all bound and limited by time, and God is not limited by time. These are the two peculiar distinctions of the Yogis. The first is that in thinking of the limited, the mind must think of the unlimited, and that if one part of the perception is true the other must be, for the reason that their value as perceptions of the mind is equal. The very fact that man has a little knowledge, shows that God has unlimited knowledge. If I am to take one, why not the other? Reason forces me to take both or reject both. If I believe that there is a man with a little knowledge, I must also admit that there is someone behind him with unlimited knowledge. The second deduction is that no knowledge can come without a teacher. It is true as the modern philosophers say, that there is something in man which evolves out of him; all knowledge is in man, but certain environments are necessary to call it out. We cannot find any knowledge without teacher, if there are men teachers, god teachers, or angel teachers, they are all limited; who was the teacher before them? We are forced to admit, as a last conclusion, One Teacher, Who is not limited by time, and that One Teacher or infinite knowledge, without beginning or end, is called God.PATANJALI YOGA SUTRAS -

In Him (in Isvara), the seed of Omniscience is unsurpassed.
Verse 25
तत्र निरतिशयं सर्वज्ञबीजम् ॥२५॥tatra niratiśayaṁ sarvajña-bījam ॥25॥In Him (in Isvara), the seed of Omniscience is unsurpassed. In verse 25, The all knowingness of Ishvara is emphasized. The mind must always travel between two extremes. You can think of limited space, but the very idea of that gives you also unlimited space. Close your eyes and think of a little space, and at the same time that you perceive the little circle, you have a circle round it of unlimited dimensions. It is the same with time.
