Why should a sadhak never curse anyone?
Gurudev Sri Sri – Whatever work we want to do, do it with good intentions. Nobody’s curse can affect you if your heart is pure. If your heart is impure then surely it will have an influence. Do not blame the world or curse the people around you. They are all a part of God’s wonderful creation. Everything here has a purpose, and everything here is to make you stronger – be it, friends or enemies. When people don’t live up to your expectations, you get frustrated and you blame or curse them. By cursing, you lose your spiritual energy. When you bless, your energy goes up. Your own experience tells you time and time again that expectations reduce your enjoyment of life. Yet, most of us do not even realise, having too many expectations about everything, could be a reason for not being naturally happy. By cursing, you lose your spiritual energy. When you can bless, your energy goes up. When you are full, the need to give curse never arises, it may happen in those who feel some lack. Speech is a big power. Our words are there to bless people, bring peace in the world never curse. Weigh your words before you speak them out. They are pearls of your life. Don’t lose them for nothing. Do not blame the world or curse the people around you. They are all a part of God’s wonderful creation. Everything here has a purpose, and everything here is to make you stronger – be it, friends or enemies. -
I tend to hurt people whom I love and push them away. Why do I do so? I am scared of love now.
Question – Gurudev, I tend to hurt people whom I love and push them away. Why do I do so? I am scared of love now.
Gurudev Sri Sri – Listen, these patterns will change, don’t be scared. If you love somebody, serve them. Don’t latch on to them, don’t police them. Be centered. You go and tell someone, love you, I love you, I love you’. They say, ‘Yes, okay’ But then what will they do? They don’t know how to respond, so they feel like running away from there. We should not express our love too much. If you express your love too much, the person to whom you express doesn’t know how to handle it. If they are enlightened and centered, they can smile and they can take it. If they are not enlightened, they don’t know how to handle the love. Like people don’t know how to handle anger and hatred, they also don’t know how to handle love. This is the reason why many times people run away. So, you should be very measured in your expression of love. Got it? See in the west, they express love too much. And in the east, they don’t express love at all. So it should be somewhere in the middle. You can’t bury a seed deep in the soil, it will never sprout. In the same way, you can’t keep the seed on top of the soil, it won’t sprout there either. You should take a little mud and sow the seed close to the surface, then it sprouts. Love is also the same. Don’t express it too much and be centered. Always remember that you are love. -
How important is having faith in life?
Question – Gurudev, how important is having faith in life?
Gurudev Sri Sri – You cannot exist without faith. Listen, suppose you have come here in a car and you have parked the car in the parking area. Now when you are sitting here you have faith that the car will be there when you go back, isn’t it?! So, without this faith can you exist? No, first of all, you should have faith in yourself. There are three types of faith which are important :1. Faith in yourself. If you do not have faith in yourself it is called paranoia. It is a disease.2. Faith in the goodness of people around you. There are good people in the world, you should have that faith, otherwise you cannot move one inch in society.3. Faith in the unknown, faith in the abstract power which seems to be running everything. That is the third type of faith. So, of these three faiths, the first two are very essential, the third will make life much better. -
I want to come to you when you are passing by but there is so much crowd. If I am not running to you, does that mean I don’t have devotion and love?
Question – Gurudev, I want to come to you when you are passing by but there is so much crowd. If I am not running to you, does that mean I don’t have devotion and love?
Gurudev Sri Sri – You don’t have to copy anyone else’s expression or behaviour. Wherever you are, I know your heart, I think sometimes better than you do. So you don’t need to worry about anything. You be relaxed and keep smiling and just ‘be’, that’s all. Keep doing what you need to do, and if you feel like coming to me, just come, no problem. My car goes quite slow and stops. I have no control over my journey as well! If someone comes, I have to stop. I have never ignored any person and gone. It’s not in my nature. I attend to people, as much as I can physically, but otherwise, I do attend to people in other ways too. Other ways are also there. No need for elaborating these things. Some things we should not elaborate, this is one of them. There are many ways you can connect with each other in the subtle. So your smile is good enough. And if you feel like communicating something, you are most welcome. Write it down, send it to me. -
Who visit the Tirupati temple donate their hair as offering at the shrine. Also, in India there is a tradition of shaving off one's head when a dear one passes away. Why is this so, and what does shaving off one's head have to do with our mind and our actions?
Question – Gurudev, devotees
who visit the Tirupati temple donate their hair as offering at the shrine. Also, in India there is a tradition of shaving off one’s head when a dear one passes away. Why is this so, and what does shaving off one’s head have to do with our mind and our actions?Gurudev Sri Sri – This is more of a conventional norm that has become a tradition over the years. It is not prescribed as mandatory by our scriptures anywhere. There are two aspects to any ritual in India. One is that prescribed as a norm or a social convention, the other is that which is mentioned and prescribed elaborately in our scriptures, which becomes tradition and for which the scriptures also narrate the benefits of practicing that particular ritualor practice. For example, many people wear collared T-shirts. Why is the collar there and what is its purpose? In winters, in the foreign countries, people fold the collar up and protect themselves from the cold, and in the summers, people loosen the collar so they feel a little cool. The English began this, and slowly everyone else adopted the same style. So it is just a custom, that’s all. There is nothing more to it. -
For how long will this leela continue?
Question – Gurudev, for how long will this leela continue?
Gurudev Sri Sri – Now that is hard to tell. No one knows for certain when it started, and so no one knows when it will end. As long as you are a part of this leela, just enjoy yourself. When we land up in a problem that is when we ask, ‘When will this end?’ But when we are having fun or enjoying ourselves, we never question, ‘When will the enjoyment end?’ Do we do that? No. So when life appears burdensome and a bondage, only then do we think to ourselves, ‘When will we be free from this?’ Do not think that you will become free sometime in the future. You are free this very moment. Just take this for granted and move ahead. All this is just a game and events keep happening. Many thoughts come and go in the mind. You would be surprised at the kind of thoughts that come to your mind. You become so nervous due to some thoughts of your mind. But you should know that thoughts come and go. So it does not carry any meaning. We are far greater than our thoughts. So just know this and relax. -
It is said that whatever had to be said has already been said, but the point is, have people heard it? Is this why so many enlightened masters have to come again and again. How to make sure this time people listen.
Question – Gurudev, it is said that whatever had to be said has already been said, but the point is, have people heard it? Is this why so many enlightened masters have to come again and again. How to make sure this time people listen.
Gurudev Sri Sri – A farmer knows the answer to this question very well. See, what does a farmer do? He takes the seeds, ploughs the field and then throws the seeds. Some seeds sprout and some don’t. He does not worry and think, Oh, this seed has not sprouted, that has sprouted.’ He just puts the seed and whichever sprouts, sprouts, and whichever doesn’t, it doesn’t. Usually most of the seeds sprout if it has been ploughed properly. And if the farmer has sown the seed at the right time, it does grow. That is what we should all do. Don’t worry about how many will reach the goal and how many will not. You do your job. A musician simply sings, he doesn’t see how many people are listening. If someone is playing the flute or the sitar, there is no guarantee that everybody sitting in the audience are keenly listening to the music. Some may even doze off while the music is playing. That is their prerogative. -
What is the significance of Ramayan?
Question – Gurudev, what is the significance of Ramayan?
Gurudev Sri Sri – The Ramayan is not just a story which happened long ago, it has a philosophical, spiritual significance and a deep truth in it. The words ‘rays’ and ‘radiance’ come from the Sanskrit root word ‘ra’. ‘Ra’ means light, ‘Ma’ means within me, in my heart. So, Ram means the light within me. That which is radiant in every particle of the being is Ram. Ram was born to Dasharath and Kousalya. Dasharath means ‘Ten Chariots’. The ten chariots symbolise the five sense organs and five organs of action. Kousalya means ‘skill’. The skillful rider of the ten chariots can give birth to Ram. When the ten are used skillfully, radiance is born within. Ram was born in Ayodhya. Ayodhya means ‘a place where no war can happen’. When there is no conflict in our mind, then the radiance can dawn. The Ramayan is not just a story which happened long ago, it has a philosophical, spiritual significance and a deep truth in it. It is said that the Ramayan is happening in your own body. Your soul is Ram, your mind is Sita, your breath or life force (prana) is Hanuman, your awareness is Laxmana and your ego is Ravan. When the mind was stolen by Ravan (the ego) then the soul got restless. Now the soul cannot reach the mind on its own, it has to take the help of the breath – the prana. With the help of the prana, the mind got reunited with the soul, and the ego vanished. -
If God is everywhere, why are we told to pray in the prayer room only?
Question – Gurudev, if God is
everywhere, why are we told to pray in the prayer room only?Gurudev Sri Sri – You can pray anywhere, but if you sit and pray in one room you make the vibrations very nice. You can eat anywhere, you can eat in the verandah, you can eat sitting in the drawing room. But there is a dining hall where you sit on the table, and there is water, there is everything, isn’t it? Like that, when you eat, you have a place to eat. So it is nice to keep a place to sit and pray also. You can sleep in the living room, you can sleep on the sofa, why do you only go to the bedroom to sleep? Because there is some arrangement. Similarly, in the pooja room there is a little arrangement. There is a lamp burning, there are some flowers kept and you can sit there and do your prayers. -
How to control emotions in times of crisis?
Question – Gurudev, how to control emotions in times of crisis?
Gurudev Sri Sri – Breathing, breathing, and breathing. Breath is the biggest secret that nature has put in you. It is linked to your emotions. Through breathing exercise technique, you can control your emotions. I think many of you have experienced this, isn’t it? (Many raise their hands) Those who have not experienced this, you must do a little bit of breathing exercises regularly, then you will have more say over your mind. -
How can I be hollow and empty all the time?
Question – Gurudev, when I do
the Art of Living Advance Meditation Program, I feel hollow and empty. But again after a week I find that I am full of desires and botherations. How can I be hollow and empty all the time?Gurudev Sri Sri – This is like asking, ‘How can I eat once for this lifetime and not have to keep eating every day?’ You know, it is such a boring job. Every day you have to cook and eat. If you eat today, again tomorrow you feel hungry. If you eat in the morning, then again in the evening you feel hungry. You cannot eat just once and be done with it because the body has its own nature. The same is with your mind. Entertainment is not enough once. Would you listen to me if I tell you that it is enough to watch only one movie in your lifetime? You need entertainment again and again. Body needs nutrition again and again. To satisfy hunger we eat food. We drink water to quench thirst. We take rest when we are tired. In the same way, spirituality is also like that. To satisfy spiritual hunger, we need to meditate again and again. -
How do we free ourselves from the pain we have received till now and what to do so that we do not receive the pain in the future?
Question – Gurudev how do we free ourselves from the pain we have received till now and what to do so that we do not receive the pain in the future?
Gurudev Sri Sri – Yoga and meditation is the only way. Here everything is painful. Even an overdose of anything pleasant becomes painful. Wanting something pleasant causes pain. After having gotten what you want, then also there is pain because there is a fear of losing it. And when it is gone, the memory of it gives pain. Something unpleasant anyways gives pain right away. But the pleasant also gives pain because wanting or craving for something pleasant, is painful. This is what happens many times. Someone wants to get into a ministerial post. Before getting into it, there is so much pain to get into the post. Once they get into the post, then maintaining it is painful. And then when they leave the post, then also there is pain, because no one respects them. But when you feel completely unattached to it, that is when the pain disappears. That is why it is said, ‘Tena tyak tena bhunji thah’. Know that all this belongs to the Divine, so just let go of attachment and enjoy. I am not saying that it is bad to get into a position, or bad to experience pleasantness, no. But you should be detached from it. -
If someone is continuously speaking badly, then what should one do?
Question – Gurudev, if someone is continuously speaking badly, then what should one do?
Gurudev Sri Sri – If someone is doing something continuously, then that is their nature. Can you say that every day the dog is barking? It is a dog only who can bark. You can’t expect a dog to say, ‘meow’. Same way, you should understand that this is their nature. If they do it continuously then you should be more relaxed. If someone does it once in a while, then you should be concerned, ‘What has happened? Has this person eaten something wrong or what?’ We can think about it. When someone is doing it continuously, it brings freedom to you. That is how they are. Why do you even have to worry about it? Just move on. At least the dog is in your house, and not in the neighbor’s house. The dog in your home, you can at least feed him something and make him shut up. But if the neighbor’s dog is crying all night and barking all day, you can’t do anything with that. So you simply have to accept the situation as it is. Keep telling your mind this and keep moving. Buy nice ear plugs and put it in your ears, or think this dog is singing a lullaby and go to sleep. -
How to get rid of my tendency to control everything everywhere and every time?
Question – Gurudev, how to get rid of my tendency to control everything everywhere and every time?
Gurudev Sri Sri – You can control small things, that is why you have this illusion (that you are in control). Just try to control the big things, stop the war in Iraq, or stop the war in Syria. A couple came to meet me and they were talking. The husband said, ‘My wife decides all the small things and I decide all the big things. Like my wife decides what car to buy, what color the house must be painted, where we should go for holiday, how we should spend our money and all these small things. I don’t interfere in her work and I do the big things. I think about how to stop the war in Iraq, who should be the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and how the nations should interact with each other, etc, and she never interferes in these matters, so we have peace at home’ (laughter). Like that if you want to have control, think about the bigger things. How you can control the weather or bring rain. If you are a control freak, you should control those things. Think about something like that. -
I have been continually unwell since a very long time and have suffered numerous accidents in the past. I’m unable to bear so much pain. What do I do?
Question – Gurudev, I have been continually unwell since a very long time and have suffered numerous accidents in the past. I’m unable to bear so much pain. What do I do?
Gurudev Sri Sri – Listen, if you had really been so unwell, then you would have never been able to come here to the Bangalore Ashram. We never notice how healthy we are. Rather we keep focusing on the small diseases and problems in life and become miserable. It is not possible that someone can be unwell all the time, or since birth. If that were the case, then such a person will not be able to come all the way here and speak during the satsang. So do not think that you have had to take a lot of trouble to come here. You are already very healthy and are smiling too. You need to bring a change in your mentality, and your outlook in life. See, the body has its own limitations but you must be strong in your heart. Sometimes in life you may suffer pain, or some disease, or meet with an accident. That is the nature of the body, and it is alright. Continue doing your seva, sadhana and satsang and everything will be alright soon. This is why we have kept all types of facilities in the Ashram, to sustain and boost a person’s health, whether it is through Ayurveda, or the other techniques that we have that can help relieve the body from illness. The main point here is that you need to keep your mind healthy and happy. -
I don't know what to choose as my career as I want to honor all my talents. Any suggestions?
Question – Gurudev, I don’t know what to choose as my career as I want to honor all my talents. Any suggestions?
Gurudev Sri Sri – One gentleman came to me who could play 40 instruments. He could play the flute, guitar, sitar, tabla, and many other more instruments. It was fascinating. I also knew a gentleman who had nearly 47 degrees, and he was not more than about 47-48 years old. I wondered how he got so many degrees. He is a lawyer, he is a doctor, he is an engineer, my goodness. Unfortunately, he died in a car accident. At the age of 47, he knew a lot of things. He simultaneously did a lot of degrees, otherwise you can’t do this. He had an amazing personality. Whatever you is good, but when you take up something, complete it. It is not that you take up something and then you drop it and take something else. Then you may be very talented but it is totally useless. So you take up something and see it through. -
The breath is so powerful. How does it work in connecting us to the subtle dimension?
Question – Gurudev, the breath is so powerful. How does it work in connecting us to the subtle dimension?
Gurudev Sri Sri – My dear, in the subtle you are already connected. The breath only makes you realise that you are connected. Your mind is always outside and it does not come back to itself, so the breath is the first step in bringing the outgoing mind inward. It is the doorway or the pathway, and meditation keeps the mind in the inner chamber. -
What is faith?
Question – Gurudev, what is faith?
Gurudev Sri Sri – That which withstands all doubts is faith. Your doubt is always about something that is positive. You doubt the honesty of somebody, you never doubt the dishonesty of someone. You doubt the love of somebody, not the hate of anyone. You doubt your happiness, you never doubt your depression. Has anybody ever doubted their depression? Have you ever said, ‘Wait, let me see, am I depressed or not’. You are so sure of depression. This is the nature of doubt and faith is that something which even doubt cannot overshadow. Once a journalist asked me, ‘Don’t beat around the bush, I want to ask a direct question. Are you enlightened?’ I just looked at him and smiled. If I say ‘Yes’ I have to prove it, so why take the headache of proving it. So I said ‘No’. He said, ‘You are kidding. I want a serious answer’. I said, ‘When I say no, it is finished, no more conversation’, yet he kept on insisting. I then said, ‘Ask your heart. Is your heart telling you that I am not telling the truth? He said, ‘Yes’. ‘So, what is that something inside you that is telling you this? Listen to that voice. Why do you ask me?’ -
I have a vatta imbalance. My mind is so restless most of the time. It is almost impossible to meditate deeply. What to do?
Question – Gurudev, I have a
vatta imbalance. My mind is so restless most of the time. It is almost impossible to meditate deeply. What to do?Gurudev Sri Sri – These imbalances are not permanent. You call it imbalance because it is impermanent. It can’t be there for too long. If vatta imbalance is there, it is going to go away. A little rest, an ayurvedic massage, a little attention on food, and some good sleep, it will be gone. You shouldn’t sit and worry about it too much. It is the nature of the body, sometimes it gets very stiff, sometimes it becomes very loose. Same thing with the head. What do you do? That is how the nature is. Do what you can, and do what is to be done, and just move on. -
Elaborate upon the contradictory nature of truth?
Question – Gurudev, please elaborate upon the contradictory nature of truth?
Gurudev Sri Sri – If you go to any temple in India, not only will you see idols of Gods and Goddesses, but you will also see the idols of many demons (representing negativity and delusion). Gods and Goddesses acquired their position because they were able to overcome these demons. If there were no demons, then how will they acquire their position? So whatever you find contradictory in nature are actually complimentary to each other. Take milk for example, is milk good or bad? If you drink only as much milk as is needed, then it is good for you. But if you drink too much, then the same milk can cause indigestion also. So when taken in excess, the same milk can harm you. In the same way, is poison good or bad? All medicines and life saving drugs have a warning label written on them that says, if taken in excess they are poisonous. So poison can help in saving life, and it can also take one’s life. That is why it is said that these aspects of. Nature may appear to be contradictory, but in reality they are actually complimentary to each other. When you go deeper in knowledge then you will realise this. A hero in a movie has some importance only when there is a villain also. If there is no villain in the movie, then the hero has no job, except to eat and sleep. When there is some mischief or some conflict that the villain creates, then all the talents and skills of the hero blossom and become evident. -
As you always ask us to surrender our botherations, pains and problems to you, in a way are we running away from our responsibilities?
Question – Gurudev, as you always ask us to surrender our botherations, pains and problems to you, in a way are we running away from our responsibilities?
Gurudev Sri Sri – No. You should have a balance there. You give your 100% and then leave the rest. Surrender does not mean running away from responsibilities, it is a sense of assurance in you that yes things are going to be well. -
Our horoscope is based on our birth time. If the birth time is unknown, does that mean our horoscope is wrong?
Question – Gurudev, our horoscope is based on our birth time. If the birth time is unknown, does that mean our horoscope is wrong?
Gurudev Sri Sri – If the timing iscorrect, interpretation is right. You can never say that it is 100% right. There is a probability of it being 80%-90% correct. And there is always an adrushya (invisible), i.e., an unknown influence. It can happen anytime and that is what is called grace. So grace has the ability to change anything at anytime. Shastras (scriptures) have their significance. Like for instance, a boy was born and the father went to the astrologer to show his son’s horoscope. The astrologer said that your son is very great. There will be many cars around him all the time around, and he will have the ability to stop anybody at anytime. So the parents thought that their son is going to become a big minister, or the president, and he will be surrounded by a fleet of cars but the son became a policeman. Today of course there are traffic lights which have come, but 20 years ago there were not as many traffic lights but only policemen who direct traffic. The father came and fought with the astrologer, ‘You told me that my son will be surrounded by a fleet of cars, but he has become a policeman’. The astrologer said, ‘See my prediction has come true even now. He is a traffic policeman and he is surrounded by many cars’. Another astrologer said to someone, ‘You will be hit by a bullet in your head’. But what happened one day, the person was wearing a big hat and something did come, but it hit the hat and took the hat away. So there is a saying in Tamil, ‘What came to head went off with my hat’. So a big trouble which would have come, by grace it went away in a small way. So here the scripture is also proved right, but at the same time you were in a right place at the right time. -
SAVIOR
Weekly Knowledge 53
St. Louis, Missouri13 Jun 1996USASEVA IS SAVIORThe way to expand from individual to universal consciousness is to share others’s sorrow and joy. As you grow, your consciousness should also grow. When you expand in Knowledge with time, then depression is not possible. Your inner most source is joy.The way to overcome personal misery is to share universal misery! The way to expand personal joy is to share universal joy. Instead of thinking “what about me?” “what can I gain from this world?” think “what can I do for the world?” When everyone comes from the point of contributing to society, you have a Divine society. We have to educate and culture our individual consciousness in order to expand in time with the Knowledge . . . from “what about me?” to “what can I contribute?”If you are not having good experiences in meditation, then do more seva — you will gain merit and your meditation will be deeper. When you bring some relief or freedom to someone through seva, good vibrations and blessings come to you. Seva brings merit; merit allows you to go deep in meditation; meditation brings back your smile.Answer to last week’s riddle:That something which is so precious to you is your smile — your joy. I’m going through a lot of problems in life. You said many times that there is some higher power who always takes care of us. Can you please help me understand this?
Question – Gurudev, I’m going through a lot of problems in life. You said many times that there is some higher power who always takes care of us. Can you please help me understand this?
Gurudev Sri Sri – When a small child gets himself dirty in the mud, he comes to the mother and shows her how his hands and feet are all dirty. He knows she will take care. Children who are one or two years old cannot take a bath themselves, so they come to the mother. Even if they need their diapers to be changed, it is the mother who has to do it. The child knows that there is someone who loves it very dearly, and who will take care of it at all times. In the same way, we must have this deep faith that there is someone who loves us totally and will take care of everything for us. If you have experienced this feeling even once, you will simply walk ahead in life with your head held high, and full enthusiasm. You will walk regally like a lion and not like some small insect. You will not cry over your problems thinking ‘Oh, I do not have this, I do not have that. You will find that everything you desire will simply fall at your feet. Be strong from within, and know that you can do what you want to do. When you know you are not alone and there is someone to take care of you, you can overcome all the hurdles that come in life. This confidence has to come from within. Meditation and Spirituality brings you inner strength, makes you sharper, more alert and gives you an unshakeable peace and unwavering love and compassion. -
If someone provokes us, should we keep quiet or teach them a lesson? If we keep quiet then they consider it as a weakness, and if we teach them a lesson, they say that we have not grown spiritually. What should be done in this case?
Question – Gurudev, if someone provokes us, should we keep quiet or teach them a lesson? If we keep quiet then they consider it as a weakness, and if we teach them a lesson, they say that we have not grown spiritually. What should be done in this case?
Gurudev Sri Sri – To teach someone a lesson, you should be calm. If you have anger, if you are disturbed, you cannot teach someone a lesson. At the same time, you cannot keep turning the other cheek all the time. Teach the lesson, but with compassion. This will give you strength. When you have understood the position of a person and why they are provoking you, you will deal with them with a calm and serene mind. -

How do you bring peace to a relationship with a lot of conflict and arguments? Do you stay in it?
Question – Gurudev, how do you bring peace to a relationship with a lot of conflict and arguments? Do you stay in it?
Gurudev Sri Sri – There are two ways to handle it :1. Move away from that place at that time – because when everybody is angry, things are heating up, everyone goes deaf. Angry people do not listen to anyone. The best thing is move away a little bit and wait for things to cool down.2. Be there, with patience – First, agree with the person, say, ‘Yes, I agree with you.’Suppose your husband or wife is arguing with you, don’t say, ‘No’, say, ‘Yes, you are right, I agree with you. The moment you agree, the temperature comes down. Then in a little gap, as the temperature comes down, say, ‘But, this is the secret. Sometimes people come to me with big ideas. I tell them, ‘Your idea is brilliant, very good, but it is impractical. Use your skill to calm the situation, and then get across what you want to the other person. -
We do sadhana regularly yet we face difficulties. Why is it so?
Question – Gurudev, we do sadhana regularly yet we face difficulties. Why is it so?
Gurudev Sri Sri – It is only when you face difficulties that you ask ‘Why do I face difficulties?’, you never ask ‘Why am I happy?’ when you are happy. When we face difficulties, sadhana gives us the strength to face it, to overcome it. Things have changed and will change. Have faith. -
Does it matter how close we sit to you if you are everywhere?
Question – Gurudev, a lot of people want to sit in front of you during satsang, and often it leads to some battles. Does it matter how close we sit to you if you are everywhere?
Gurudev Sri Sri – I tell you a secret, they simply don’t know that more blessings go to the people who are the back(laughter). They should drop this ‘Me’ and allow everyone a chance to come to the front. ‘Yesterday I sat, today let someone else sit’. This should be the attitude. Unless you have a role to play, you are singing or you are a translator. Otherwise, give space for others. That shows that you have digested something of what you heard, else all the knowledge that you have heard is gone. -
Once we are on the path we should just relax as you are doing all the work. What does this mean?
Question – Gurudev, you have
said that once we are on the path we should just relax as you are doing all the work. What does this mean?Gurudev Sri Sri – I say many things at many times, don’t take it of out context. You should keep it in context. I have said, ‘Till you catch a train you have to run, once you have caught the train, relax withyour luggage. Just by you running inside the train with your luggage, the train is not going to run any faster. So, once you’re on the spiritual path, drop your anxiety, relax and you will reach where you have to reach’. I say don’t go spiritual shopping. Some people go spiritual shopping, a little bit here, a little bit there. Relax. You have gotten wonderful knowledge and a wonderful path, all in one package. Just relax. -
Does meat industry create violence?
Question – Gurudev, does meat industry create violence?
Gurudev Sri Sri – Meat industry, I would say is outdated now because people have started understanding how our whole system is made for vegetarian food. We are herbivorous because our immediate ancestors, apes are vegetarians. Monkeys, cows, zebras are vegetarian. Most of the domestic animals are vegetarian and our system is made for vegetarian food. Personally, if you see the way the animals are tortured to make food for you and you look into their eyes, nobody will touch that food because we all have a human heart, compassion and sensibility. The meat industry keeps unaware of how it is produced and they only give you the meat to consume it. But once you see how it is produced and how much torture the animal undergoes, you will abstain from it. Today with the growth of natural food, people have changed their preferences. In North America, a large section of the population has found health in vegetarian food. -
How do we cope with small minded people?
Question – Gurudev, how do we cope with small minded people?
Gurudev Sri Sri – See, there are so many types of people in this world. How many people do you know who have for no reason become your enemies? Your good friends have become your enemies? Isn’t it? Similarly, so many people who were unknown to us have helped us at some point of time. We may not have done anything for them, but they helped us out. So friends or enemies are all a cause of our karmas. If our time is wrong, friends can become enemies, and if our time is right, enemies can turn into friends. -
What is the technique to be followed daily so that impressions don't remain in the mind, intellect or the memory?
Question – Gurudev, what is the technique to be followed daily so that impressions don’t remain in the mind, intellect or the memory?
Gurudev Sri Sri – Just relax, be natural. If you say that I do not want this impression to remain in my mind, then you are making that impression even stronger. If it is there it is there, and if it is not there it is not there. So just relax and you will see that whatever is the right thing will stay on. -
How can one improve the presence of the mind?
Question – Gurudev, how can one improve the presence of the mind? One has such long hours and so much travel these days.
Gurudev Sri Sri – Some breathing techniques, pranayama, and meditation would help you improve your presence of mind. Doing pranayama in the morning and evening keeps you really fresh. I work for about 19 hours every day, and I keep travelling quite a lot, also. Do I look tired? It definitely helps. -
To get rid of negativity?
Question – Gurudev, my parents deeply follow astrology and force me into it. Should I follow it or is Sudarshan Kriya sufficient to get rid of negativity?
Gurudev Sri Sri – Yes, this is good enough. Astrology is a science, an ancient gift to the world, but too much into it is also ignorance, and discarding it totally is also ignorance. Knowledge of it is good but ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ is the best remedy to all astrological problems. -
How should one balance life between social service, business and responsibilities at home?
Question – Gurudev, how should one balance life between social service, business and responsibilities at home?
Gurudev Sri Sri – Do you all drive cars here? Yes. When you drive a car what do you do? You look at the side mirrors, rear view mirror and you look in the windshield as well. How do you balance all three? You can’t say, ‘I will only look at the rear mirror’. or, ‘I only look in the front’ or, ‘I only look at the sides’. You have to simultaneously do all the three and you do that? Exactly same way. Rear view mirror is like knowing the past. You should have little memory of the past. If you have done some mistake, it should not be repeated. Front mirror is like the vision of life ahead. That is why, the front windshield is very big and the rear view mirror is very small. Then there are side mirrors, these are for you to be aware of what is happening around you all the time. So how you use all three? Exactly same way. -
I would like to bring this program to the corporate world
Question – Gurudev, there are many smart people in my company. Now when I introduce a spiritual course to these smart souls, I fear they would get awakened and may start feeling a dispassion for business, and the true meaning of life would attract them elsewhere. I would like to bring this program to the corporate world. So what is the best way to introduce them to something like this without having this fear?
Gurudev Sri Sri – Actually, what The Art of Living gives in this course is something to develop their personalities. Their sharpness of intellect, calmness of their mind, and to bring an inspiration from within. That is what we focus on. So, you can be assured that they won’t run away, or become dispassionate. Millions of people have done this course, we have not seen anyone run away. Otherwise World Bank would not have taken this program as a part of their leadership seminars. It all depends on how you present the inner calmness. I understand when you say your inner calmness or liberation is important, and people may tend to go to in that direction, but here, it is all about finding the inner creativity and peace, and to be able to manage any adverse situation with a smile. -
karma can we overcome it by purshartha (making efforts)?
Question – Gurudev, it is said that when one has accumulated sins, then one does not feel like doing spiritual practices or going to satsang. But if at some point of time if we become aware that this is happening because of a particular karma, then can we overcome it by purshartha (making efforts)?
Gurudev Sri Sri – Yes, absolutely. That is the intelligent thing to do also. Such people are the intelligent ones. You cannot call them foolish or ignorant. When you are aware of a wrong action you have done, then spiritual practises and satsang can help you cut away all these negative karmas. -
What can I offer as a gift to the Divine?
Question – Gurudev, the Divine has given me everything. What can I offer as a gift to the Divine?
Gurudev Sri Sri – Keep this question with yourself from time to time, the Divine will take the appropriate gift from you. Whenever you feel upset, hatred, anger, or any negative emotion, give it to the Divine and be happy. Spread the knowledge, and happiness to other people. The happiness, faith, and devotion you have, whether it is a spark or a flame, should spread to other people so that they experience the same joy, and happiness in their lives. -
I worry too much about failure, especially when I am doing something important. It decreases my efficiency. How to overcome this?
Question – Gurudev, I worry too much about failure, especially when I am doing something important. It decreases my efficiency. How to overcome this?
Gurudev Sri Sri – A new beginning. That was the past – drop it. Have faith that there are many more new things to come into your life. One thing that you should know is that you don’t know yourself. When you look at what you did in the past or your weaknesses, the first step to gain confidence is to know that you don’t know yourself. When you think that you know yourself, only then do you attach yourself with all these negative events and qualities. But when you wake up and see that, ‘Hey, I don’t know myself’, then it is a new beginning. Then you will discover that there are so many strengths within you that you were not aware of. -
Nirvitarka samadhi is even beyond the experience of bliss
Weekly Knowledge 51
29 May 1996NetherlandsSAMADHIA single cell becomes the whole body. Somewhere it is nails, somewhere it is nose and tongue but all is a manifestation of a single cell. In the same way, the entire universe is made up of a single substance.Remembering and FEELING that everything is made up of one thing heals the body and mind and balances the doshas in the body (vata, pitta and kapha). This is savitarka samadhi. Savitarka samadhi means equanimity with logical awareness.Deep sleep can be jada samadhi (equanimity with inertia). And hence, sleep is the main factor in healing. Even medicines will not help without sleep and rest.Samadhi with ecstasy has no logic. This is nirvitarka samadhi, awareness with bliss.Nirvitarka samadhi is even beyond the experience of bliss, undefinable beyond words.🌸Jai Guru Dev🌸साप्ताहिक ज्ञानपत्र ०५१२९ मई,१९९६डैन हाग, नीदरलॅंड्ससमाधीएक अकेला कोष पूर्ण शरीर बन जाता है।
Life is a combination of effort and effortlessness
Anything that is natural does not require effort. You bathe in the morning. Do you bathe with a lot of interest? Do you brush your teeth with a lot of interest? No, you don’t. Just because you have to do it, you do it! It’s natural and effortless!
Like when you are smiling naturally, that smile is effortless. But if you are asked to smile then that becomes a difficult task. Doing an action that requires effort is ‘Aasakti.’However, doing work that comes naturally and gives you inner peace is done in ‘Nirasakti’.If you ask those who prepare food every day, they would be able to prepare it without much effort. However if the same task is handed to a person who never cooks, he will flip through the pages of a recipe book again and again, to prepare the same food. He will keep tasting the food to check the balance of spices. So wherever effort is applied, the job is done with ‘Aasakti’, and this leads to feverishness. You being feverish about going to, for example, Mysore is ‘Aasakti’; and effortlessly driving your car to Mysore is ‘Nirasakti’.‘Nirasakti’ is not disinterestedness or depression; it is just an effortless attitude. The next effortless thing is meditation. If you put effort into meditation, that is it! You will not be able to do it. Meditation happens effortlessly.Life is a combination of effort and effortlessness and they are complementary! If you work dynamically, you sleep well. If you have memorised well, you remember automatically. If you are doing service, you are able to love more, because there is satisfaction and your heart is opening up. If you can see beauty everywhere, you can appreciate beauty! When you can do this, things become effortless; even jobs requiring effort, will not be strenuous. Do you see, when you want to do something, when the heart is in it, when there is an appreciation of beauty, then even effort is not strenuous?Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji -
How to bring children who oppose the path onto the path?
Question – Gurudev, how to bring children who oppose the path onto the path?
Gurudev Sri Sri – You know, a parent cannot influence their teenagers, but they can influence the friends of their children. So, before you become a good mother or a good father, you have to become a good uncle or aunt. The friends of your children will have more respect for you, and will listen to you. So tell your daughter or your son to bring all their friends home, and then you talk to them separately. You can influence them, and through them you can influence your children. It is like, if there is a mango tree in the garden and you want a mango, you will throw a stone at the branch so that the mango falls, but you will not hit the mango directly. That is the indirect way in which you have to deal with your teenagers. -
What was the relationship between Radha and Krishna. What was so special about their relationship that even Krishna's wife did not get the same place as Radha?
Question – Gurudev, what was
the relationship between Radha and Krishna. What was so special about their relationship that even Krishna’s wife did not get the same place as Radha?Gurudev Sri Sri – Though I have never read the Srimad Bhagavatam but I have heard that it is mentioned that Radha is not mentioned anywhere. The very meaning of the word ‘Radha’ means to return to your source. ‘Dhara’ means that which comes from the source, while ‘Radha’ means that which goes back to the source. So Radha is a Shakti (divine power). Until we go to the source we cannot experience Lord Krishna. Why is it so? It is because Lord Krishna is the source and Radha is the way or path to the source. So even if you are Rukmini or Satyabhama (the main wives of Lord Krishna), till you become Radha, till you return to the source, you cannot attain Lord Krishna. This is the hidden meaning behind this symbolism. -
Shri Jagannath means the Lord of the Worlds
Understanding Lord Jagannath
आत्मानं रथिनं विद्धि शरीरं रथमेव तु।बुद्धिं तु सारथिं विद्धि मनः प्रगहमेव च॥Katha Upanishad said Our body is the chariot and our very Self or soul is its charioteer, intellect is its driver, the mind is its reins, the sense organs are the horses pulling the chariot. The philosophical interpretation through Yogic practices this chariot will start its spiritual journey towards Paramatma, where lies the Parama Dhama, the abode of ever blissful state. The Yogic way in order to realize Lord Jagannath has to start the spiritual journey from the root chakra to the crown chakra raising the Kundalini to the Sahasrara where Lord Jagannath is placed on the Ratna Simhasana.Lord Shri Ram had 12 kalas, Shri Krishna had 16 and at present during Kaliyuga silently sitting and watching as Lord Jagannath; Jagath(world) + Nath (lord). Jagat is the spinal cord consisting of various Chakras starting from Muladhara Chakra up to Ajna Chakra and Natha is the Supreme Soul of the Crown Chakra, Sahasrara. The 16 Kalas of Sri Krishna are the divine arts or attributes of Sri Krishna that makes him Purna Avatar (the complete avatar).Five Kalas like 1) Anna Maya (with cereals), 2) Pranamaya (with breath), 3) Mano Maya (with mind), 4) Vigyanamaya (with knowledge) and 5) Anandamaya (with joy) are present in every human being. With little effort, humans can perfect in three more kalas – 6) Atishayini, (With Peace) 7) Viparinabhimi (With Love) and 8) Sankramini. (With Creator)The other remaining eight Kalas are 9) Prabhvi. 10) Kunthini, 11) Vikasini, 12) Maryadini, 16) Sanhaladini, 14) Ahladini,1 5) Paripurna and 16) Swarupavasthit : Anybody who has the ninth Kala besides the first five natural Kalas and next three perfected Kalas, becomes the god.As per scriptures, the ninth kalas Prabhvi means : Kartum Akartum, that is able to do seemingly impossible tasks. Lord Narasinh is an example of this ninth Kala. Lord Narasinh has an altogether different appearance. He had a body of human and head of a lion. He appeared from a stone pillar that demon Hiranyakashipu had broken with a blow of his mace. It is not possible for an ordinary human being, only a God, having the ninth Kala Prabhvi, can do this. Among all these incarnations, only Lord Krishna is full of all the sixteen Kalas. In this scriptural appearance Lord Krishna holds nothing but only a seemingly ordinary flute. Even the flute of Lord Krishna is full of all the Kalas and is a symbol of love. In his entire life. Lord Krishna only once raised a weapon, that to in the form of wheel during the battle of Mahabharata, to protect the vow of Pitamaha Bheeshma. Otherwise, only the flute was everything for him. Like a magic stick the flute accompanied Lord Krishna all through his life. With the enchanting tone of the flute, Lord Krishna hypnotized the world (Sammohana) hence, Lord Krishna is also known as Mohana; one that hypnotizes or enchants. One must learn from it that one must have unconditional love for all the organisms in the word. If one has true, unconditional love for everyone, the world will one day bow before him, very much like when Lord Krishna played enchanting tunes on his flute in Vrindavana, and all the womenfolk and Gopis of Vraja gathered around him, Keeping all their shyness and social bindings at bay. Thus that tune of Lord Krishna’s flute was a symbol of love. And love has no limits, no bindings.Shri Jagannath means the Lord of the Worlds, and it is Lord Vishnu, the protector of the Universe with 64 kalas who is Bhairav of Mata Bimala Devi (Bhairavi with 64kalas). Lord Vishnu took the form of Jagannath in the 11 th century, Adi Shankaracharya times to give an opportunity for the people of this Kaliyug to do service to His Lotus feet, and thus to wash away few of our sins. Actually according to Skanda Purana, Odia Mahabharata and Manika Panjika, it is mentioned that Lord Jagannath is the 9th Avatar of Lord Vishnu instead of Gautam Buddha. The holy land of Odisha is divided into four kshetras as per Rigveda. These kshetras are named after the four names of weapons of Lord Vishnu such as sankha (conch shell), chakra (disc), gada (mace) and padma (lotus). Puri Dham is known as Sankha Kshetra. Bhubaneswar is Chakra Kshetra, Jajpura is Gada Kshetra, and Konark is Padma Kshetra. Sankha or conch shell is one of the Aiyudhas of Lord Vishnu, who resides in the naval or the central part of the Conch shell in the form of Lord Jagannath. The geographical size of Puri resembles a right oriented conch shell, the ‘Dakshinavarta Sankha’, which is why it is also called the Sankha Kshetra. The Sankha Kshetra covers an area of 10 miles, out of which nearly 40% is submerged under water and the other part which lies above water is of the shape of a conch shell or Sankha. The sacred section of puri looks like a conch shell and it is in this section that all the sacred centres like temples, mathas, sacred tanks, trees and various other sacred sites are located. The Char Dham defined by Adi Shankaracharya consists of two Vaishnavite, one Shaivite, and one mixed site. Geographically the Char Dham makes a perfect square with Badrinath and Rameswaram falling on the same longitude and Dwarka and Puri on the same latitude, representing the farthest north, east, west, and south points of India and four pillars at the time of Adi Shankara. During his extensive tour throughout India, he also established Mathas in those four places dedicated to the research and preservation of four Vedas. Jyotir Matha as an example at Badrinath, was assigned the task of maintaining and preserving of Atharv Veda. Sharada Matha at Dwaraka was assigned the task of maintaining and preserving the Sam Veda. Sringeri Matha at Sringeri hills in the South India was assigned the task of Yajur Veda and Govardhan Matha at Puri was assigned the task of Rig Veda. From Rigveda; Tantra as a part which expands (vipula) on matters relating to essence (arthan) of philosophy (tattva) and mantra that help to attain liberation. Tattva is the study of the Absolute principle. Tantra brings the realization of tattva (tat=That) within ones experience, with the help of Mantra-Sadhana. Tantra is therefore an intuitional wisdom that liberates. At the same time, it is said, devotion and complete surrender is the secret of Tantra Sadhana. And, it is characterized by high regard, implicit obedience and unquestioned faith. Thousand years before our ancestors know about Kamasutra (84 vers) and display outer wall of all Kalinga Culture (the Rigveda Culture) you can see Puri Jagannath temple, Bhubaneswar Lingaraj Temple and Konark Sun Temple. We still have a lot of good people trying to do good and stay on the path of righteousness. When there is complete anarchy and the evil will feel that it has no opposition, then Lord Kalki will come. All the avatars of Vishnu came to save mankind; the Mother Earth. Kaliyug is mainly ruled by rahu who is karak of material world or illusion world along with ketu (the spiritual). Lord Jagannath (illusions master of the world) is the most mysterious and controller of Rahu and ketu. Actually the motive of Lord Jagannath is to bring Peace among people and show that God is neither doesn’t have any shape nor has any shape. Now it is up to the devotees to interpret with their own views. Jay Jagannath -
