  • How do I know if I’m deeply in love with a person or if it is just an attachment?

Question – Gurudev, how do I know if I’m deeply in love with a person or if it is just an attachment?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Time will tell (Laughter). Always know that there is a sense of sacrifice in love, while attachment only brings misery. In the name of love, if you fall in an infatuation or attachment, then you will only get misery. But in true love, even sacrifice brings contentment. Love brings sacrifice and contentment, while attachment and feverishness can only bring misery.

  • Is it true that if we have less number of desires, there’s a higher chance of them getting fulfilled?

Question – Gurudev, is it true that if we have less number of desires, there’s a higher chance of them getting fulfilled?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Yes. When you have less things to do, you will do it really attentively. You put your 100% energy, focus into it when there are less things to do. If you have many things to do, you need to have that much energy, broad awareness and consciousness. If you’re enlightened, you can do a million things without getting bogged down by anything.

  • My parents are old and still have arguments and fights after being married for 50+ years. Will they ever change?

Question – Gurudev, my parents are old and still have arguments and fights after being married for 50+ years. Will they ever change?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Come on, they are having fun in their life, why do you want to stop it? Without arguments and fights life will be so boring; no spice. They enjoy a spicy dinner, let them have it. Why you want to make it bland? If it gets too hot, pour a little ghee, put some butter in between. It happens, what to do? Someone asked a gentlemen, ‘Why do you fight with your wife so much?’ He said, ‘What do you mean? I love her, so I fight with her. Who else do I fight with’ and that is correct. Sometimes it happens.
  • Some people think one has to master the yamas and niyamas (The yamas and nivamas five behaviors to avoid and five to engage constitute the first two limbs) before one can practice the other 6 limbs out of the 8 limbs of Yoga as propounded in Patanjali Yoga Sutras. What is your take on this?

Question – Gurudev, some people think one has to master the yamas and niyamas (The yamas and nivamas five behaviors to avoid and five to engage constitute the first two limbs) before one can practice the other 6 limbs out of the 8 limbs of Yoga as propounded in Patanjali Yoga Sutras. What is your take on this?

Gurudev Sri Sri – The limbs are not sequential, they are all together. The practice of the others contributes to the ability to observe the yamas and niyamas. When we teach meditation in prisons, we see that the moment they have a taste of meditation, their whole thought process and behavior pattern changes. They start on the path of non-violence. They become very truthful, and the tendencies to cheat disappear. So the yamas and niyamas start happening in people’s lives just when they begin meditation. Yoga would be incomplete if even one limb is absent from it. All the eight limbs coexist. Our program is the same way. We do some asana, and some pranayama-breathing exercises-and meditation that leads to samadhi (the 8th limb, not a practice but a state of consciousness transcending thought).
  • I experience some intense vibrations especially when I am in bliss. Can you please talk about different levels of layers of energy in our body?

Question – Gurudev, I experience some intense vibrations especially when I am in bliss. Can you please talk about different levels of layers of energy in our body?

Gurudev Sri Sri – This entire universe is nothing but vibrations. It is all made up of waves, vibrations, and energy. When your vibrations do not match with the vibrations of others you call it negative, and when your vibrations match with other vibrations, it is harmonious and you call it bliss. When your energy becomes such that it becomes universal, then whatever the outer circumstances may be, you remain oblivious to it. We went to Machu Pichu in South America, in Peru, and the people asked me, ‘How do you feel the vibrations here? ‘I said, ‘I do not feel anything’, this is because wherever we go we create our own vibrations. So I do not say, ‘Oh, this is negative and that is not. Of course, when people are agitating, upset or sad, it definitely creates negative vibrations around you, no doubt. But remember that they are not as powerful as your positive vibrations. It may appear to you that they are over powering, but in reality it is not so.
  • I need your guidance. I am a mother and a wife, and I run a small school. There are times when things go wrong entirely, and I can't concentrate or be myself at my workplace. How do I manage that?

Question – Gurudev, I need your guidance. I am a mother and a wife, and I run a small school. There are times when things go wrong entirely, and I can’t concentrate or be myself at my workplace. How do I manage that?

Gurudev Sri Sri – It is okay if it is only sometimes. But if it is often then we need to attend to it. First of all, know that as an individual, you have the capacity to multi task. If you think, ‘Oh, I am a mother, I cannot be good at the office. It is not possible for me’, or, ‘I am an office goer, so I am not doing justice to my children’, these sorts of conflicts weighs very heavy on your emotions and your mind. First you should know that you have the capacity to be a mother, a good wife, and a good officer or a good businesswomen. Resolve the conflict right at the root, instilling confidence in your capabilities. The second is that, it is the quality of time and not the quantity of time that is important in whatever you are doing. You don’t have to spend 10 hours with your kids. Even one hour that you spend with your kids, if you are there with them a 100%, that makes them more satisfied. The root cause of all this is stress. If you don’t relax and relieve stress, at least for a few minutes every day, whatever concepts you may have in your head, will be blown away by your emotions because our emotions are much stronger than our thoughts. Many times we remain determined, but the surge of emotions, anger, frustration, desires, when they come, it just blows everything away. The intellect, or all our concepts, are like the gatekeeper of the house. Emotions are like the owner of the house. When the owner of the house comes in, the gatekeeper has no way to stop him. You just have to let him in. We have to set right the emotions inside. That is where meditation, Sudarshan Kriya, pranayama, come very handy.
  • How do the planets have an influence on our health?

Question – Gurudev, how do the planets have an influence on our health?

Gurudev Sri Sri – The macrocosm and microcosm have a big connection. Each planet is aligned with a particular grain, color, shape, bird and animal. All these are connected; it is also connected to a particular part of the body. Even your fingers. Do you know, every finger is connected to a particular planet? It is an amazing science of the uniting of the macrocosm and microcosm. For example, the planet Mars is connected to the liver and pitta, and pitta is connected with channa daal (chick peas, humus). If you eat too much chick peas, you will find your pitta increasing. So, pitta, chick peas, Mars, they are all connected. There is something called Medical Astrology, where you can see in a chart, what type of diseases you could get or be prone to. This could also be seen from a chart, astrologically. Astrology is an amazing science but astrologers have not studied it properly. I have my own reservations about astrologers. However, I know about astrology, about how this connection is so scientific. It is very systematic, the connections are established very scientifically. See, the Sun is connected with your eyes. Similarly, Jupiter is connected to your nose. Saturn is connected to your teeth, and cheeks are connected to Venus. The forehead is connected to Mercury. So, this is a very beautiful science, and you can know things precisely. You see someone’s face and you can make a chart. However, these sciences are lost, almost lost.
  • I give generously to my loved ones. But often I find myself taking care of others, before taking care of myself, and then I have regret and resentment. How do I give in a healthier way?

    Question – Gurudev, I give

generously to my loved ones. But often I find myself taking care of others, before taking care of myself, and then I have regret and resentment. How do I give in a healthier way?
Gurudev Sri Sri – Listen, you seem to have too much free time. Why you think so much? You want to give, then give and forget about it. There is a saying in Hindi, ‘Neki kar aur dariya mein daal’, which means, do good deeds and then drop them in the ocean. Don’t care about them. If you think, ‘I have done, I have done, what have you done? You cannot give anything to anyone that is not due to them. It is impossible. Even if you want to give, and it is not time for that person to take it, he will not be able to take it. So you give, and then forget about it. Just be spontaneous, you don’t have to think too much about it. There is no need to feel guilty when you have a need, just go buy it. That is it. You cannot satisfy everybody’s desires all the time, but whatever you can do, you must do. Then you cannot say, ‘No, I don’t want to do. Then that pricks you. If there is something that you truly need, and you cannot give others, that will not prick you. When does it prick you? When you can and you don’t do it.
  • We have heard that you have a 20 hour day, where do you get the drive and the inspiration from?

Question – Gurudev, we have heard that you have a 20 hour day, where do you get the drive and the inspiration from?

Gurudev Sri Sri – When you want to do some work, energy is there. There is an old saying, ‘Where there is a will there is a way. One thing I always believed in was that, never do anything that is not in your nature, that doesn’t feel natural to you. When I work, I am still connected to my higher self. So perhaps I do not feel drained that easily. I think love is the biggest force on the planet, and when we connect ourselves we find an enormous source of energy within us and then action is just spontaneous, it is not an effort. Whenever there is effort, it drains energy. But when action is spontaneous you will see that enthusiasm and energy remains with you all through.
  • How do I explain the idea of success to my children in simple straight words?

Question – Gurudev, how do I explain the idea of success to my children in simple straight words?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Children do not mind success or failure. For kids I would say leave them as they are and don’t try to put a concept of success or failure in their minds. Let them experience life in totality, as it comes to them. For adults I have a different formula. For adults, measure your success by the numbers of hours vou smile. Your smile and your confidence indicates your success. Your fearlessness and ability to share and care for people indicate your success. As far as kids are concerned, tell them that whatever is the result, it is fine. Whether they win a prize or they lose, its okay. If they pass an exam or if they do not do so well, it’s okay. Just remind them that they need to pass the exam, need to study little more, and put a little more effort. Do not try to impose this idea that they have to be successful in life. This can become a big tension. Many teenagers have this tremendous pressure to be successful and they land up with many psychosomatic illnesses. So I would say that the natural and creative tendency that children have should be protected.
  • What use is my humility if I am not successful? Humility without success doesn't really mean anything. What do you think?

Question – Gurudev, what use is my humility if I am not successful? Humility without success doesn’t really mean anything. What do you think?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Arrogance is not going to bring you success, either. Humility does not mean being wiggly, wiggly. Humility does not need to be that way. Humility is friendliness, simplicity, and being natural. If it is that much, it is always good. You cannot be successful in business by being arrogant. If you are arrogant, you will make more losses than gains. This is my understanding, you all should have better experience with it.
  • I feel that in this world, the intelligent people are full of doubt, while the stupid ones are full of confidence. Why is it so?

Question – Gurudev, I feel that in this world, the intelligent people are full of doubt, while the stupid ones are full of confidence. Why is it so?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Doubt, within a limit, is a sign of intelligence. Beyond a limit, it is a disease. If you have self doubt, then you can’t do anything. Doubt can clog your intellect like a disease. Also, if you keep on doubting everybody around you, you can’t do business. Business depends on trust. Administration depends on trust. Again, a sincere doubt is good, to awaken you towards knowledge. But beyond limit, it can cause heartaches and drag you backwards. Life should be like when you are in a car, where the windshield is big, you have a side mirror, and a little mirror to see the back. Just imagine if your windshield is as small as the rear mirror, and the rear mirror is as big as your windshield, then you are only seeing the past. You can’t move anywhere. So, you need to know a little bit about the past. Sometimes, you need to look into the rear mirror, and sometimes, you have to look in the side mirror. The windshield is your present, the vision of where you want to go.

  • I’m going through a lot of problems. Can you please tell the formula for happiness?

Question – Gurudev, currently I’m going through a lot of problems. Can you please tell the formula for happiness?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Take a look at your own life. You have gone through and come out of many problems, which you had thought were impossible. It appeared to have shaken you at that moment, but later on you found that you were as complete as you were before. Nature will put many events in your path to shake your faith, but even then if your faith still remains then you have become a really perfect person, and things will move smoothly. If you have a problem now, realise that this too will go because you have the energy and power to overcome it. Do some breathing exercises like Sudarshan Kriya and meditation to stay calm. And most importantly, have the confidence that you will be helped a power in the universe is going to help you.
  • How spirituality can be the one answer to all the problems in the world?

Question – Gurudev, how spirituality can be the one answer to all the problems in the world?

Gurudev Sri Sri – This is because the problem is created by human beings. The source of the problems is one, i.e, humans, then the solution can also be one, isn’t it? Spirituality is dealing with that basic aspect of human beings. If the foundation is not right, then the building will have a problem. So if you want to keep the building intact, then a strong foundation is very essential. Spirituality is the foundation.
  • Knowledge is bringing me more confusion. What should I do?

Question – Gurudev, earlier ignorance was leading me to fear, but now, sometimes, knowledge is bringing me more confusion. What should I do?

Gurudev Sri Sri – That is good. The purpose of knowledge is to confuse you again, and again, and again. It is not to bring clarity. At every level of confusion, you jump one more step higher. So, never mind. When there is no confusion, it is like a ramp walk, where there is no jumping. But sometimes, it is like steps, where you have to leave one step, and go one step higher. And that is when confusion happens. Now don’t ask me, ‘Does that mean that if there is no confusion and I’m clear in my life, then is there no growth? Or am I not progressing? Is knowledge not working for me?’ Nothing like that. You are on a ramp walk, on a cake walk. When that is not there then you are in a Mr. Toad’s wild ride, a bumpy road, and it is good
  • What should one do when one experiences sorrow and suffering?

Question – Gurudev, what should one do when one experiences sorrow and suffering?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Have patience. When you have come here to the Ashram, drop all your sorrow and miseries here, and just walk ahead. There is no misery or suffering that cannot be gotten rid of. Have you ever seen a cloud that never moves and stays in one place permanently? It is impossible. In the same way, your misery and suffering are like clouds. Some clouds disappear in an instant, while some take a little longer to go away. But they do pass away and that is inevitable.
  • What is the power of the subconscious mind and how do I utilise it?

Question – Gurudev, what is the power of the subconscious mind and how do I utilise it?

Gurudev Sri Sri – The conscious mind is in fact only one-tenth of your subconscious mind. So the subconscious mind has a lot of power. Suppose you are having a pyjama party and eight of you are sleeping and someone calls out your name, only you will respond. Others will continue to remain in deep sleep. Is it not so? Have you noticed this? This indicates that even your name is ingrained in your subconscious mind. Meditation is the way to make the subconscious mind become more and more conscious.
  • It is said that meditation is a practice of Satyug, while remembering and chanting the name of the Lord is emphasized more in the Kalyug. Could you please shed more light on this?

Question – Gurudev, it is said that meditation is a practice of Satyug, while remembering and chanting the name of the Lord is emphasized more in the Kalyug. Could you please shed more light on this?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Chanting the name of the Lord is the sole means of liberation in Kalyug. As one goes on chanting the name of the Lord, gradually a stage comes when the chanting stops and one naturally slip into meditation. So one goes from Japa (chanting) to the state of Ajapa-Japa (chanting without the mental effort normally needed to repeat the mantra), and then into silence. The very purpose of chanting is to lead you into meditation. It is said, ‘Naam laet bhava sindhu sukhai’, (simply by repeated chanting of the Lord’s names, one can immerse oneself into the ocean of bliss). So simply by chanting the name of the Lord also, one can be at peace, and can go deep into meditation. This is very effortless, and that is what is in the Sahaj Samadhi meditation as well.
  • Being cynical makes me more pragmatic and helps me deal with the worst situations. Is this wrong?

Question – Gurudev, being cynical makes me more pragmatic and helps me deal with the worst situations. Is this wrong?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Cynicism was once considered fashionable, but today, cynicism has taken over intellectuals to such an extent that it is no longer palatable and it is no longer creative. It does not do any good to oneself or to society. Cynicism is okay if it is like the pickle in the corner of the plate. But if your whole plate is filled with pickle, and you have only a tiny piece of roti (flat bread) in some corner, then just imagine how that would be. You would remain hungry, and this is what has happened today. Cynicism should bring pragmatism in you, no doubt, but it should not take away your imaginative ability, your transformational zeal. It should not overshadow your positive state of mind or kill your aspirations and hopes. If that is there then okay, have a little bit of cynicism. You find that even the Vedas are a little cynical. It is said, ‘Who knows the beginning of creation. God knows; or maybe he also does not know.’ This is what is said in the Vedas. Sarcasm and cynicism is all okay, just remember the example of pickle. It cannot take the place of rice, dal (lentil soup) or roti, but a little bit can be there somewhere in the corner.
  • How to get a faith that never shakes?

Question – Gurudev, how to get a faith that never shakes?

Gurudev Sri Sri – If it is true faith, let it shake. Truth will never go, and if the faith is with the truth, let it shake. It will never get lost. In fact, you should doubt as much as possible. You can say, ‘Don’t doubt’, only when a thing is not a genuine thing. If it is genuine gold, I tell you, go on scratching as much as possible. But if it is just rolled in gold, or gold polish, then you say, ‘Don’t scratch too much because it will disappear.’ With true gold, any amount of scratching will not make it go away. Doubt is simply lack of energy. When you are high in energy, where is the doubt? Doubt comes when the energy is low. True faith is that which you shake a 100 times and it still stays on. That is true faith, and it will remain.
  • Is there any relationship between ego and possessiveness? Please suggest ways on how to get out of both these tendencies.

Question – Gurudev, Is there any relationship between ego and possessiveness? Please suggest ways on how to get out of both these tendencies.

Gurudev Sri Sri – Yes. Ego, possessiveness, jealousy, anger, greed are all linked. They are linked to the ego. Now, how to get rid of the ego? This is a big problem. Actually the solution is very simple. Just agree to be crazy for one day. Just act like a crazy person for one day. That is good enough. Ego means that you are trying to impress others. You need the other for ego to be there. When you are alone in a place, there cannot be any ego. Ego pops up when the other is there. If you are like a child, if you are natural and feeling at home, that is the best antidote for ego. Ego cannot sustain or survive when naturalness takes over, and when you feel at home with everybody and have a sense of belongingness with everyone. All these qualities can transform you. If the ego still says, ‘I am’, then that ego should be expanded. One is a Transparent Ego, the other is an Expanded Ego. Both mean the same. The Expanded Ego means – everyone is included – everyone belongs to me. I am everything. That is very good. So, either pump your ego and make it very big. or transform it with simple acts of simplicity and innocence. That just makes ego transparent.
  • How can I find my inner destination, my real passion? Or should I just stop searching?

Question – Gurudev, how can I find my inner destination, my real passion? Or should I just stop searching?

Gurudev Sri Sri – I think that is a good idea, stop searching and just relax. Go deep within. See, the nature of the mind is to go towards newer things. Newer things are always outside, so the mind goes on searching outside. However, when the mind starts taking an inward journey, it starts recognising even new things as ancient ones. You have a new experience till it feels not new, but very familiar and ancient. That is why it is called Nitya Nutan, which means ever new, and yet it is also Sanatan, which means lasting beyond time immemorial. The soul, the consciousness, is Nitya Nutan (ever new). Every moment it is new, yet it is most ancient, like the sun. Today the sun is very new. Fresh sun rays are coming. You are not getting old, stale or antique sunrays. Yet, is the sun new? No, the sun is ancient. In the same way, rivers are ancient but the water in the river is absolutely fresh, and new. The moon is ancient, yet the rays of the moon are ever fresh. It is the same with our spirit, our self. It is nitya nutan, ever new, and yet ancient. It is an oxymoron, ever new and yet ancient.
  • What to do, is it my ignorance?

Question – Gurudev, the wise have said that if someone slaps you on one cheek, turn the other cheek as well. I got slapped twice in this bargain. What to do, is it my ignorance?

Gurudev Sri Sri – You got slapped twice by the same person or a different person? That makes all the difference. You know, you can keep turning your cheek to different people and they will only slap once. That does not show you of your intelligence. You should see whether the person who slaps you on one side, if he is sensitive and cultured then you can show the other cheek, no doubt. But if the same person is insensitive, then not the third time, because you have only two cheeks.
  • How important is having faith in life?

Question – Gurudev, how important is having faith in life?

Gurudev Sri Sri – You cannot exist without faith. Listen, suppose you have come here in a car and you have parked the car in the parking area. Now when you are sitting here you have faith that the car will be there when you go back, isn’t it?! So, without this faith can you exist? No, first of all, you should have faith in yourself. There are three types of faith which are important :
    1. Faith in yourself. If you do not have faith in yourself it is called paranoia. It is a disease.
    2. Faith in the goodness of people around you. There are good people in the world, you should have that faith, otherwise you cannot move one inch in society.
    3. Faith in the unknown, faith in the abstract power which seems to be running everything. That is the third type of faith. So, of these three faiths, the first two are very essential, the third will make life much better.
  • What is the difference between Spirituality and Astrology?

Question – Gurudev, what is the difference between Spirituality and Astrology?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Well, spirituality is related to the Atma soul and astrology is related to planets. Astrology deals with observing the movements of the planets and making calculations related to the events that are yet to happen. The science of vast is related to direction, to space, while astrology is related to time. But the One beyond space and time is Mahadeva (Lord Shiva). That’s why for remedying any ill effects of vastu or any of the astrological movement of planets, just pray to Lord Shiva. He is the Lord of all planets and He can move them to favourable positions for your benefit.
  • We are on the path we should just relax as you are doing all the work. What does this mean?

Question – Gurudev, you have said that once we are on the path we should just relax as you are doing all the work. What does this mean?

Gurudev Sri Sri – I say many things at many times, don’t take it of out context. You should keep it in context. I have said, ‘Till you catch a train you have to run, once you have caught the train, relax with your luggage. Just by you running inside the train with your luggage, the train is not going to run any faster. So, once you’re on the spiritual path, drop your anxiety, relax and you will reach where you have to reach’. I say don’t go spiritual shopping. Some people go spiritual shopping, a little bit here, a little bit there. Relax, you have gotten wonderful knowledge and a wonderful path, all in one package. Just relax.
  • Divine takes care of everyone, then why is there poverty, why there are floods?

Question – Gurudev, yesterday you said that the divine takes care of everyone, then why is there poverty, why there are floods?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Imagine a situation when there are no problems in the world. You go to see a movie and in that movie there are no problems and no tension. A man gets up, eats, goes to work, comes home and goes to sleep, and does the same thing every day. Will you go and watch such a movie? Will you enjoy such a movie? When do you enjoy a movie? When there is a villain in it, or some tension, or some problems in it. Then you come out and say, ‘This is a very good movie. In the same way, this world is like a movie for God. Anyway nobody dies from floods. They all come back in another body. We also need something to do. Just imagine if there are no problems in the world, everybody is healthy and happy, then there will be no room for compassion. Who will you have compassion towards? Compassion and all other values will disappear. So problems are here in this world so that we realise our purpose in this world.
  • How to accept a person or a spouse as they are?

Question – Gurudev, how to accept a person or a spouse as they are?

Gurudev Sri Sri – I have no experience in this. This is where Vedanta comes into the practical side of life. You will see the whole past is gone, it is like a dream, finished. At least now, be enthusiastic. It is up to you to create enthusiasm every moment in your life. How can you do it? You can’t do it if you are holding onto the past. You must simply kick the past. Let go of it. Okay, yesterday they made a mistake, never mind. Some pleasant things happen, some unpleasant things happen, some good things happen, some bad things happen. Throw them all. Right now, your job is to create positive energy and enthusiasm in the atmosphere, and see that there is more love in the family. Can we all do this? This is living in wisdom. Once in six months or a year, if you want to complain, sit and complain for an hour and then forget about it. But don’t do it every day. I don’t ask you to be goody goody things all the time. Life is a combination of everything, sometimes fights, anger, and joy. Life should have multi-colors, you should have all colors in life, no need to have one uniform. However, you should be able to snap out of all this little flickering of the mind, and this knowledge will help youEveryday wake up and say, ‘Shivoham, I am the consciousness, pure and beautiful. So, today, take this beautiful message with you, ‘Everything is nothing’, it is all dream. There are two things. One is shravana, which means listening. The other is manana, which means bringing the knowledge to your mind, your conscious attention a few times. Both are important and will help a lot.
  • It’s said that getting a human birth is fortune. However, some people live very comfortable lives while others live miserably. Why this discrimination?

Question – Gurudev, it’s said that getting a human birth is fortune. However, some people live very comfortable lives while others live miserably. Why this discrimination?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Those who are happy must share with those who are unhappy. Those who are unhappy must have an attitude of sacrifice and work on developing inner strength. Knowledge gives you inner strength. Inner strength brings forbearance in life and gives one the capacity to have a good conduct with others. That is why Gyan (knowledge), Gaan (music) and Dhyan (meditation) are very important in life.
  • When love turns into bitterness, what to do?

Question – Gurudev, when love turns into bitterness, what to do?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Just wait, don’t react, the bitterness will turn back into love again. You often see that the people for whom you have done so much, they turn bitter and you expect everyone to be in an enlightened state, that is not possible in the world. Everyone is not just going to be smiling and accepting you as you are, and unconditionally being in a giving and loving space. That is not possible. You will have to face reactions, and you should face it, that is all.
  • For the past 9 months, I have been feeling spiritually disconnected. There is no interest, no practice, no seva, and no longing. This has become quite painful. Any advice?

Question – Gurudev,  for the past 9 months, I have been feeling spiritually disconnected. There is no interest, no practice, no seva, and no longing. This has become quite painful. Any advice?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Such things can happen to people, this is called the Dark night of the soul. Suddenly, you lose interest in spirituality, or anything that is good. Your mind goes into things which are really not evolutionary, or may get into a destructive mode. Such things can occur once in 12 years or 30 years. If it comes once in 12 years, it stays for a year, and if it comes once in 30 years, it stays for nearly 2.5 years. The best way to overcome this is to hang on to your sadhana, and chant Om Namah Shivaya. It is the best chant to sail through such unpleasant vibrations or mindsets.
  • When will all the negative thoughts go away?

Question – Gurudev, when will all the negative thoughts go away?

Gurudev Sri Sri – They won’t go away, they will stay. What are you going to do? You have to live with them. There is no chance to get rid of them. The best thing to do is to make friends with them, shake hands with them, and make them sit next to you. If they are on your lap, tell them, ‘Please sit next to me, not on my head or my lap. It is too heavy, too long’.
  • I try really hard, but I can't seem to get rid of negative thoughts?

Question – Gurudev, I try really hard, but I can’t seem to get rid of negative thoughts?

Gurudev Sri Sri – That is the problem. When negative thoughts come, don’t chase them. If you chase them, then they come back with a big army. Just shake hands with them, say, ‘Come on, sit with me.’ Then they will disappear. These are the reasons we need to learn to meditate. When we meditate, we learn how to handle negative thoughts, or any thoughts for that matter. How to distinguish meditation from sleep or day dreaming? These are the things covered in the three day Art of Living Meditation program.
  • After wandering and feeling lost for many years, I have found you. Please tell me where do I go ahead from here now?

Question – Gurudev, after wandering and feeling lost for many years, I have found you. Please tell me where do I go ahead from here now?

Gurudev Sri Sri – See, all that wandering around has gotten you tired. So now that you are here, just relax and be happy. Once you come to my school, then you are here for good, even after you have graduate. Usually in schools when you graduate, you move out but my school is not like that. I will not make you run around from one grade to another. This is a school that takes you all the way to your (ultimate) goal and establishes you there, so that you can be content and at rest. Just by being here you will get all that you need to reach the goal. Once you have reached your home (here meaning one’s final destination), do you ever ask where you should go from there? So now that you are home, just relax.
  • Is meditation the most effective way of harmonizing that relationship?

Question – Gurudev, is meditation the most effective way of harmonizing that relationship?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Any technique will have to lead you to meditation. There is only one way to quench your thirst, i.e., by liquids. Only liquids can quench your thirst, right? It can be any liquid, but it has to be liquid, right? So, meditation is a state which is not waking, sleeping or dreaming, it is the fourth state, where your body is restful, and mind is alert.
Praver and meditation are very close. In prayer, you are thanking or asking for something, whereas, from a layman’s point of view, in meditation, one is ready to listen. So, you could call meditation a higher form of prayer. Meditation is a state of the mind, it is not just a process. It is also the final product.
  • Why do people crave for power?

Question – Gurudev, why do people crave for power?

Gurudev Sri Sri – People crave power because they want attention and recognition. Power is a means, just like money. Their passion is for the goal. People who see power or money as an end in itself do not live, they simply exist. If you do not realize that you are the power – that you are enlightened – then you crave power. If you do not have talents, love, or passion, or if you are not innocent and childlike, then you will crave attention and recognition. Just as some politicians, you will crave power. If you have no talents and you are not contributing substantially to society such as an artist, a scientist, an Art of Living teacher, or a volunteer – then you will be hungry for power. If you do not have a love or a passion to help transform society, then you will be hungry for power.
  • Did Om originate from silence, or did silence originate from Om? Which is the root, Om or nothingness?

Question – Gurudev, did Om originate from silence, or did silence originate from Om? Which is the root, Om or nothingness?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Om is the origin of everything. If it is called the origin of everything, how can Om originate from silence? Silence is absence of sound, but Om is beyond silence. All sounds come from silence, but Om is not a sound like all other sounds. Om is the very vibration of all existence, that is why it is called the sound of one hand clapping. It is not something that happened with the clash of two hands. It is beyond space and beyond time, and is beyond words.
  • How to overcome the pain of losing a family member and that pain in my memory keeps bothering me a lot?

Question – Gurudev, how to overcome the pain of losing a family member and that pain in my memory keeps bothering me a lot?

Gurudev Sri Sri – See with this very awareness that this human life is transient and it is not permanent and everyone is supposed to go one day including you. This awareness itself will calm you down. Also, understanding the very fact that any love or good experiences that you get from anyone close to you is actually coming from the divine through that form or person. If you can see the current behind the bulb? that is helping the bulb glow then you won’t get stuck with that person and accept the reality.
  • Can meditation make people non-violent? Can it help people who are incarcerated?

Question – Gurudev, can meditation make people non-violent? Can it help people who are incarcerated?

Gurudev Sri Sri – We have been doing our program in prisons around the world. If you can take some time to visit the website and read the experience of the prisoners, you will see the impact it has had on them. Nearly 400,000 prisoners around the world have done the program, and their negative mindset has completely changed from a criminal mindset to a compassionate mindset. We have also been doing this program in schools, where there are challenged children and many incidences of violence, it has helped there too. In a Chicago school district where there were 260 incidences of violence, after the program was taught to all the children, it came down to 62 incidents, within a short period of time. So, the impact is very clear. It is obvious that meditation can make people non-violent, from within.
  • I’m in a comfortable job that pays me well. But these days, I get strong thoughts at times like, 'What I’m doing here? Am I supposed to be doing something more worthwhile?' What do I do?

Question – Gurudev, I’m in a comfortable job that pays me well. But these days, I get strong thoughts at times like, ‘What I’m doing here? Am I supposed to be doing something more worthwhile?’ What do I do?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Yes, devote your free time to doing some good service, sadhana (spiritual practices) and satsang. All these are very precious to one’s life. Don’t keep sitting and watching movies every day, or TV serials every day. This is what we do. Come back home, put on the television and keep watching day after day after day. This is all we do, it is such a waste. am not against you watching TV, watch it, but once in a while, once a week or twice a week is good enough, but not every day. It is wasting time. Or keep one or two hours a day for service to the society. If not that, then keep one hour aside and write some knowledge, or go onto Facebook, or the social media and do that seva, spread the knowledge. What do you say? Good idea? It is creative and you will feel satisfied doing it. Instead of just being a spectator, be a participant in this phenomenon called the universe. You should be a participant, or agent of change in society, rather than just watching television every day and looking at what is happening. Got it? You can watch television, but not for two-three hours. Instead, dedicate one hour to doing some creative work.
  • Why do we cry in your presence?

Question – Gurudev, why do we cry in your presence?

Gurudev Sri Sri – When the heart opens, tears flow. It’s quite natural .When the heart opens and these are not bitter or salty tears, they are sweet tears. These are tears of love, of gratitude. So let it be. Don’t try to stop it or don’t try to enhance it, just let it be.
  • Is taking a divorce a hindrance on the spiritual path? I’m very upset with my life since I got married?

Question – Gurudev, is taking a divorce a hindrance on the spiritual path? I’m very upset with my life since I got married.

Gurudev Sri Sri – See, you give your 100%. If your marriage works that is good. If it doesn’t work, if both of you are miserable and there is not even an iota of joy there, then there is no point in hanging onto such a state of misery. Then amicably both of you should tell each other, ‘You have your way and we will still be friends’.
  • What is the technique to be followed daily so that impressions don't remain in the mind, intellect or the memory?

Question – Gurudev, what is the technique to be followed daily so that impressions don’t remain in the mind, intellect or the memory?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Just relax, be natural. If you say that I do not want this impression to remain in my mind, then you are making that impression even stronger. If it is there it is there, and if it is not there it is not there. So just relax. You will see that whatever is the right thing will stay on.
  • What was the relationship between Radha and Krishna. What was so special about their relationship that even Krishna's wife did not get the same place as Radha?

Question – Gurudev, what was the relationship between Radha and Krishna. What was so special about their relationship that even Krishna’s wife did not get the same place as Radha?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Though I have never read the Srimad Bhagavatam but I have heard that it is mentioned that Radha is not mentioned anywhere. The very meaning of the word Radha’ means to return to your source. ‘Dhara’ means that which comes from the source, while ‘Radha’ means that which goes back to the source. So Radha is a Shakti (divine power). Until we go to the source we cannot experience Lord Krishna. Why is it so? It is because Lord Krishna is the source and Radha is the way or path to the source. So even if you are Rukmini or Satyabhama (the main wives of Lord Krishna), till you become Radha, till you return to the source, you cannot attain Lord Krishna. This is the hidden meaning behind this symbolism.
  • No matter what I do to please my husband he is never happy. He keeps finding faults in me. What should I do?

Question – Gurudev, no matter what I do to please my husband he is never happy. He keeps finding faults in me. What should I do?

Gurudev Sri Sri – If you know that this is his habit then why are you getting so disturbed? Accept him and move on. Keep yourself happy. If you do not get disturbed by his behaviour then he will start to change. Every person has some or the other negative quality in them. And these negative qualities are also there to push your buttons, so that you become strong. Once you become strong, then they will start to change. In life, everything changes, and there are some things that do not change. We need to accept both these situations.
  • How does one actually keep a check on their emotions and be aware? And when one's emotions are shaken, what to do?

Question – Gurudev, how does one actually keep a check on their emotions and be aware? And when one’s emotions are shaken, what to do?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Yes, if your emotions are shaken, let it be shaken as much as it can be. You know, there is nothing called compassion here. In higher knowledge, compassion is stupidity. Why? You can be compassionate only to somebody else, who is not you. Suppose your hand got hurt , you don’t say, I am so compassionate towards my hand. Do you ever say that? When you say that everyone is part of you, where is compassion there? Okay, you got hurt, it’s because of your own foolishness you got hurt. Put some ointment and forget about it. When you get hurt, it’s your karma. You must have hurt somebody sometime and so you got it back now. Nothing happens without a reason. This is the highest knowledge. So, some Masters will always say that if you are suffering, it’s not because of somebody, it’s because of you only. You better suffer and get rid of it. Instead of that, if you say, “That person is responsible for my suffering”, then you are making more karma and carrying it on to the next lifetime. But if you say, “My suffering is because of me, and I take ownership of the karma”, then you become free. Saying, “My suffering is due to that person”, will continue the karma because that impression will be there in your mind. Why are you not looking inside? Why are you not moving on? Why are you holding onto an event of the past and blaming the other person for your karma? If you do this then you will continue to be miserable.
  • What is the difference between karma and destiny?

Question – Gurudev, what is the difference between karma and destiny?

Gurudev Sri Sri – The word destiny means vidhi, this is how it is. The word karma has several different connotations. It can mean action or latent action. The impression of an action that might give rise to another action can also be called karma.
  • What is the difference between Shiva Tattva and Krishna consciousness?

Question – Gurudev, what is the difference between Shiva Tattva and Krishna consciousness?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Shiva Tattva is a theory, it has no physical form. Krishna is one who imbibed the Shiva Tattva in total, in the human form. Krishna was a historical figure. He lived 5,114 years ago. Krishna walked on the planet, but he imbibed the Shiva Tattva. He was hollow and empty, and then he reflected the Shiva Tattva fully, time to time.
  • How should one balance life between social service, business and responsibilities at home?

Question – Gurudev, how should one balance life between social service, business and responsibilities at home?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Do you all drive cars here? Yes, when you drive a car what do you do? You look at the side mirrors, rear view mirror and you look in the windshield as well. How do you balance all three? You can’t say, ‘I will only look at the rear mirror’, or, ‘I only look in the front’, or, ‘I only look at the sides’. You have to simultaneously do all the three and you do that? Exactly same way. Rear view mirror is like knowing the past. You should have little memory of the past. If you have done some mistake, it should not be repeated. Front mirror is like the vision of life ahead. That is why, the front windshield is very big and the rear view mirror is very small. Then there are side mirrors, these are for you to be aware of what is happening around you all the time. So how you use all three? Exactly same way.
  • How can one improve the presence of the mind? One has such long hours and so much travel these days?

Question – Gurudev, how can one improve the presence of the mind? One has such long hours and so much travel these days.

Gurudev Sri Sri – Some breathing techniques, pranayama, and meditation would help you improve your presence of mind. Doing pranayama in the morning and evening keeps you really fresh. I work for about 19 hours every day, and I keep travelling quite a lot, also. Do I look tired? It definitely helps.
  • It is said that when one has accumulated paap (sins), then one does not feel like doing sadhana (spiritual practices) or going to Satsang. But if at some point of time if we become aware that this is happening because of a particular karma, then can we overcome it by purushartha (making efforts)?

Question – Gurudev, it is said that when one has accumulated paap (sins), then one does not feel like doing sadhana (spiritual practices) or going to Satsang. But if at some point of time if we become aware that this is happening because of a particular karma, then can we overcome it by purushartha (making efforts)?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Yes, absolutely. That is the intelligent thing to do also. Such people are the intelligent ones. You cannot call them foolish or ignorant. When you are aware of a wrong action you have done, then sadhana and satsang can help you cut away all these negative karmas.
  • No matter what I do to please my husband he is never happy. He keeps finding faults in me. What should I do?

Question – Gurudev, no matter what I do to please my husband he is never happy. He keeps finding faults in me. What should I do?

Gurudev Sri Sri – If you know that this is his habit then why are you getting so disturbed. Accept him and move on. Keep yourself happy. If you do not get disturbed by his behaviour then he will start to change. Every person has some or the other negative quality in them and these negative qualities are also there to push your buttons, so that you become strong. Once you become strong, then they will start to change. In life, everything changes, and there are some things that do not change. We need to accept both these situations.
  • What is the best way to introduce them to a spiritual course without having this fear?

Question – Gurudev, there are many smart people in my company. Now when I introduce a spiritual course to these smart souls, I fear they would get awakened and may start feeling a dispassion for business, and the true meaning of life would attract them elsewhere. I would like to bring this program to the corporate world. So what is the best way to introduce them to something like this without having this fear?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Actually, what The Art of Living gives in this course is something to develop their personalities. Their sharpness of intellect, calmness of their mind, and to bring an inspiration from within. That is what we focus on. So, you can be assured that they won’t run away, or become dispassionate. Millions of people have done this course, we have not seen anyone run away. Otherwise World Bank would not have taken this program as a part of their leadership seminars. It all depends on how you present the inner calmness. I understand when you say your inner calmness or liberation is important, and people may tend to go to in that direction, but here, it is all about finding the inner creativity and peace, and to be able to manage any adverse situation with a smile.
  • In pain and problem which is why he is not able to communicate with me or anyone. What do I do?

Question – Gurudev, I try communicating with my father, I try to talk to him but he acts freaky. He gets high and creates chaos. I do not know what to do and how to communicate with him. I know he is in lot of pain and problem which is why he is not able to communicate with me or anyone. What do I do?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Win him over with love. You know sometime you should walk the same path as the ones who create chaos and then slowly make them understand and change. Just do this, do not oppose him for two days and do whatever he says. Give him so much love that he will melt. Did you understand? Did you get what I mean? Have you tried this way?
(Devotee – Gurudev, I have tried talking to him but it does not work) Talking is not good, have you asked him, ‘Papa, what do you want? What can I do for you?’ Have you asked him that? (Devotee – No, I have not) See, not once you have asked him, ‘Papa, what do you want? What can I do for you?’ Now go and ask him this? Do you know why people create chaos? It is because they feel insecure. They do not feel loved. They often think, I do so much for my wife and children by sacrificing my whole life for them from morning till evening, yet they do not care for me.’ This feeling takes a deep hold in their heart. In their entire life, they did not get many chances to go places and see things around. They dedicated all of their life to the welfare of their wife and children. So when they do not get any love and respect in return, they become angry. When no one listens to them and they do not get get respect then the anger increases. Though they themselves do not behave in a manner to get respect yet they do not understand this. Is this not what the issue really is?
(Devotee – Yes Gurudev) His behavior is not such that you can give him respect, but does he understand this? So what you need to do is, you need to go and ask him when he is in a good mood, ‘Papa what do you want? What can I do for you?’ See, no one is in an angry mood all the time. People do have good moods. When they are in a good mood then you can communicate.
  • What to do when our mind plays tricks. Please guide us?

Question – Gurudev, what to do when our mind plays tricks. Please guide us?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Just let it be.
That is the secret to handle the mind. Just let it be. That is the secret to handle the mind. If you try to get rid of the mind, it becomes a monster. If you just let the mind be, it will vanish. When you are not aware of the tricks and the mumbo jumbo going on in the mind, then life is misery. This is because life is based on the mind. When you recognise that all this is in my mind (judging people and situations, holding concepts about the self and others), you recognize that you are making a mess of everything in your mind. ‘This is how it should be’, or, ‘It should not be like this’, whenever such thoughts come, it means the mind is coming into play; this is all part of the world. This is where you need to latch onto that non changing, abstract, invisible energy or power. When you latch onto it, you are no longer caught in the grip of the mind. When we are in the grip of the mind, we make ourselves and others miserable. Look back at your mind, not at others, and see what drama and pain has been caused by it. When you do that, it is no longer pain, it is entertainment. It is like a multi-channel television, a movie channel that has caused so much comedy, suspense, drama, and misery in your life. This is the reason why all the great saints and poets always addressed their own mind, ‘Oh, my dear mind, how fascinating you are, why do you get caught up in so many things. Why do you not recognize that which is so magnanimous, and so beautiful?’ Rumi, Kabir, all the great saints, have sung about their own mind. In The Bhagavad Gita also, it is said that the mind is responsible for your freedom and bondage.
  • What is heaven and what is enlightenment?

Question – Gurudev, what is heaven and what is enlightenment?

Gurudev Sri Sri – You still have a lot of time left to know about heaven. There is no use in knowing about heaven now otherwise there will not be any excitement left when you actually get there. But it is important to understand enlightenment now. When you feel content you are enlightened. When everything feels like a dream you are enlightened. Just tell me, whatever has happened so far in your life, does it not seem more like a dream? You went to school, then college, got married, so many events took place in your life, all that is like a dream now. Isn’t it? Now you are sitting here among so many people, does this not seem like a dream? After today, many days and many years are going to come and pass and eventually we are all going to die, then will it not seem like a dream? If you look into the past or the future or if you decide to wake up to the present everything will still feel like a dream, you will realise you are separate from the events you see and experience. This is enlightenment or liberation. And when you feel free you feel happiness and where there is happiness that place in nothing short of heaven. Doesn’t this place feel like heaven. We are not those who go to heaven but those who create heaven where we are. We bring heaven to us.
  • How can I get more happiness and joy from everywhere?

Question – Gurudev, how can I get more happiness and joy from everywhere?

Gurudev Sri Sri – This race for more and more is killing us. More and more and more, how can I get more? Relax, my dear. We don’t even have enough time to enjoy what we have. We should think how we can be more useful to the society, how can we serve more? One who is always thinking of getting something is like a beggar. Everything comes to the one who thinks how she/he can contribute more to the society. There won’t be any shortage for such a person.
  • What is your biggest wish? What can I do to get closer to your heart?

Question – Gurudev, what is your biggest wish? What can I do to get closer to your heart?

Gurudev Sri Sri – You are already close to my heart. I want more children to be educated in spirituality in order to create a violence free and stress free society. We need to globalise wisdom. There are one thousand of us here. If we each sponsor a child, we would do a great service. Do service. Donate 2% of your income. It would be of immense benefit to you and to those who need it.
  • I’m not sure about what I want to do in life. I want to ask you but I don't even know what to ask and what exactly I want. I get bored doing anything in very little time. I find myself being very moody. I’m not satisfied or happy doing anything. How can I live my life with this kind of mental state?

Question – Gurudev, I’m not sure about what I want to do in life. I want to ask you but I don’t even know what to ask and what exactly I want. I get bored doing anything in very little time. I find myself being very moody. I’m not satisfied or happy doing anything. How can I live my life with this kind of mental state?

Gurudev Sri Sri – You want comfort too much. Get out of your comfort zone. You are only thinking of your comfort and pleasure; that is when you get into this sort of stage or state. You are here to be useful to somebody else. You are here to do something useful to someone. How can you be bored? Even if you are bored, you have to do that, because what you do is useful to someone else. If you are self-centered, and you think, ‘If I like it only then I will do it’, then that is not seva. That won’t bring you satisfaction. Do you see what I’m saying? I don’t like meeting people’, but you are meeting people for your sake or for their sake? If you are m meeting people for their sake, then your life is fulfilling. You may say, ‘Guruji, you can do this, but what about me? I cannot do this. At least do something. You don’t have to do what I am doing; at least do a portion of it, maybe 5-10-%. See, I am very free, but yet I am not free. Every day of mine is bound. Do you see what I am saying? You have all come here to be in satsang with me, I will say, ‘Oh, I don’t feel like being here. I feel moody. I want to go somewhere, to Shawinigan, Trois-Riveres’, and I take a car and just walk away and you are sitting here, waiting for Guruji, where is Guruji? I don’t want to do this but I am doing it all the 365 days. I am answering the same questions, people are saying, ‘Will you find a husband for me?’ ‘Will you find a wife for me?’ or ‘Get me a job’, or do this, or do that, or take a picture with me, ‘You don’t care for me’, ‘You care for me’, all these stories. Do I feel bored? I have been doing this for 30 years now, more than 30 years, even before The Art of Living too, for 40 years.
  • How do we experience fullness?

Question – Gurudev, how do we experience fullness?

Gurudev Sri Sri – What is it that you lack? Recognise this first. Because of this lack you feel sad. When you feel sad and helpless, then you pray. Offer your limitations, instead of only offering money in places of worship. The Divine is ready to accept all your weaknesses or limitations. That Divinity which is complete, resides in you. The Divine is eternal, omniscient and omnipotent. Knowing that you are a part on that Divinity, how can you feel limited or incomplete? Know that you are complete with the help of knowledge, devotion and rightful actions. Even if you do not know, have faith that you are complete. You do not have to achieve it. There is air around us. We have to know it or believe it but we don’t have to achieve it because it is already there. Similarly, without the Divine, we do not exist. How is the Divine? What does He do? These are meaningless questions. The Divine is there. The Divine is my very own. I am a part of the Divine. It is easier to start with the feeling that the Divine is your very own and in time you will know that you are part of the Divine.
  • How to deal with my child asking too many questions?

Question – Gurudev, how to deal with my child asking too many questions?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Children ask questions and often they are not looking for an answer, they move on whether you answer or not. Children are not stuck in questions like adults. Adults get stuck in questions, and ask the same questions ten times, children don’t care. The spirit of inquiry comes to their mind, they ask a question and move on. So, you shouldn’t take it too seriously.
  • How to recognise that we are all unique and valuable?

Question – Gurudev, how to recognise that we are all unique and valuable?

Gurudev Sri Sri – You are a Masterpiece. A plum once said, ‘just because a banana lover came by, I converted myself into a banana. Unfortunately, his taste changed after a few months and so I became an orange. When he said I was bitter I became an apple, but he went in search of grapes. Yielding to the opinions of so many people, I have changed so many times that I no more know who I am. How I wish I had remained a plum and waited for a plum lover. Just because a group of people do not accept you as you are, there is no necessity for you to strip yourself of your originality. You need to think good of yourself, for the world takes you at your own estimate. Never stoop down in order to gain recognition. Never let go of your true self to win a relationship. In the long run, you will regret that you traded your greatest glory – your uniqueness, for momentary validation. Even Gandhi was not accepted by many people. The group that does not accept you as you, is not your world. There is a world for each one of you, where you shall reign as king/queen by just being yourself. Find that world and that world will find you. What water can do, gasoline cannot and what copper can, gold cannot. The fragility of the ant enables it to move and the rigidity of the tree enables it to stay rooted. Everything and everybody has been designed with a proportion of uniqueness to serve a purpose that we can fulfil only by being our unique self. You are here to be you, just you. Existence should have loved you so much that it broke the mould after making you, so that another of your kind will never get repeated. You are original.
  • We read in the puranas committing some sin. We never read of agni, varuna, vayu, or any of the other Gods committing sin. There must be some significance or some learning from this as well, just like the story of Ganesha. Could you please explain the spiritual meaning of this?

Question – Gurudev, often we read in the puranas committing some sin. We never read of agni, varuna, vayu, or any of the other Gods committing sin. There must be some significance or some learning from this as well, just like the story of Ganesha. Could you please explain the spiritual meaning of this?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Indra is the mob psychology. What we call mob mentality? A group has a mind of its own. That group mind is called Indra. Indra is supposed to have 1000 eyes. 1000 eyes do not mean that somebody has eyes all over. It refers to a group which has 500 people, one mob. So the group creates a consciousness, a mentality and that is what Indra is. That is why, when an enlightened person is born, Indra gets so offended, because the mob psychology cannot exist then. A person of enlightenment and awareness does not allow mob psychology to grow. Do you see what I am saying? He puts sense in to the minds of the people. He tells everyone, ‘Hey, think with your mind, wake up. Each one of you, think’. That is why Indra gets scared whenever a Rishi or Sage is meditating. The mob, the collective consciousness is what is called Indra. It is not some person sitting up there in the heaven. Indra is right here. Just like we have all the five elements – earth, water, fire, air and ether, Indra is the collective consciousness. With the mob psychology, what usually happens, someone will say, ‘Oh, our leader has been maligned’ and evervhody then starts They nut fire on the buses they desecrate statues, etc and the mob keeps moving on without knowing what they are doing. A mob goes on a rampage, destroying people, life and property, isn’t it? One must have the shat sampattis (six wealths, or six fold virtues) :
    • Sama (calmness or quietude of mind)
    • Dama (self control or restraint of the senses)
    • Uparati (satiety)
    • Titiksha (power of endurance)
    • Shradha (faith), and
    • Samadhana (equanimity or one-pointedness of the mind)
  • Why do you have 2 Sris in your name?

Question – Gurudev, why do you have 2 Sris in your name?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Oh, I thought three is too much. Actually, my name was getting confused with the sitar player. Even big media channels, when Pandit Ravi Shankar passed away, had put my photograph. And all were thinking and saying that I am no more on this planet. I am still here. So at a point of time, Pandit Ravi Shankar’s name was getting confused with mine. And if you put just one Sri Ravi Shankar, that would be common. So Gurudev could make it a little bit more specific and clear a lot of confusions which were arising, because many times people think that I am playing sitar and come to my program. Many times, our famous Sitar player got calls to inquire when he was conducting meditation classes. So to save both of us from this problem, we both agreed that I should keep it in this way.
  • Gurudev, what is your message for everyone?

Question – Gurudev, what is your message for everyone?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Every face on this earth is the book of the universe, the book of God. Everybody is a fountain of love. Let this love be expressed, let this fountain flow, and enrich our planet at this time. Love and blessings to all of you.
  • All the knowledge that I have listened to, seems to vanish out of my being when my mother in law comes to visit. How can one forget and forgive someone who is constantly behaving in a harsh manner? Please give the advice to the mother in law.

Question – Gurudev, all the knowledge that I have listened to, seems to vanish out of my being when my mother in law comes to visit. How can one forget and forgive someone who is constantly behaving in a harsh manner? Please give the advice to the mother in law.

Gurudev Sri Sri – Listen, I want you to just take a look at how your mother behaves. How many times did you have arguments with your own mother, and how many times was she frustrated with you? Haven’t you gotten scolding from your own mother? I don’t think any girl or boy has grown up without being scolded by their mother. have gotten many scoldings from my mother. She used to always think that I was not doing things as well as her and that she always knew better. Even about the running of the ashram, she would say, “No, you don’t run the ashram properly”. My biggest critic was my own mother. So you have this experience. When your mom criticizes you, you just fight with her and then you forget it. It doesn’t really touch you. My dear remember your mother and mother in law are of the same age, the same kind and the same category. She scolds you only 10% of what your mother used to scold you, then why does it hurt you deeply? So just accept her. You can’t change her. If you forget your knowledge at other times, it is okay. But when your mother in law comes, that is exactly when all your knowledge is needed. Those days don’t forget to listen to knowledge talks. People who are tough to handle, whether at office or at home, only help you to develop your skills. You should really thank them. They make you more skilfull, more refined, more compassionate and all your good qualities can start manifesting. See, this is the difference. If you have knowledge, in tough situations, wisdom manifests and good things manifest out of it. If vou lack skills, the worst things come out of it. So this one thing we need to master. Master the skill of expressing and communication, and grab this as an opportunity to do that.
  • How to handle so much competition around us that brings jealousy sometimes?

Question – Gurudev, how to handle so much competition around us that brings jealousy sometimes?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Question papers of medical entrance examination leaked. AIFF suspends 16-year-old football sensation for being overage. CBI catches two for cheating in civil services exam. How often is this the front page news that you read? Competitions have become cut-throat businesses, and when they seem manipulated or rigged, you disbelieve the people and organizations involved. Consequently, you lose your own sense of fair play too. So, there is little faith when dealing with competitions. Do we really need them? What do they prove after all? That there are always loopholes and ways to cheat? Fortunately, or unfortunately, from the earliest times, humans have wanted to compare and weigh themselves against others. It helps in setting standards, knowing where you stand in a crowd, assessing your aptitude and skill levels, and being the best and excelling. Also, a little study of economics will teach you that given the scarcity of resources, there will always be a race to the finish that we disparagingly call the rat race today. On the bright side, competitions bring out the best in you. You feel inspired to perform and are even motivated by other people’s brainwaves. But, this is the rosy side isn’t it? How many of us are graceful in defeat and in victory? Is it possible for aggression and ambition to be healthy and positive? Competition is not a sign of jealousy it simply means you are competing with yourself to be your best version.
  • How can I build trust again when I only see things are not going my way?

Question – Gurudev, how can I build trust again when I only see things are not going my way?

Gurudev Sri Sri – See life from a bigger picture. How many of you think that you are going to be here forever? How many of you are thinking that you are going to be here for the next 30 years, raise your hands. How many of you are thinking that you are going to be here for more than 50 years, raise your hands. And how many of you are going to be here for the next hundred years? We don’t see life from a bigger perspective. My dear, you are not going to be here forever, just remember. But all of this is going to be there, Malaysia will be there, Kuala Lumpur will be there, but you won’t be here. This was here even before you. You will be here for the next 30-40 years, then what, where will you be? What is life? Who are you? These questions should arise in you and when they do, that shows that our intellect is maturing. Are you with me? Do all of you agree with what I am saying? So when we see life from a broader perspective then small, insignificant things fall off, all that little quarrel, worries, what that person said, what this person said, it all falls away. So what if somebody insulted you, so what. The person who has insulted you will no longer be here. Everybody will pack-up, they won’t even pack up, they will simply go. There is nothing to pack here. On your journey you at least have to pack your luggage, but here you will simply disappear one day, that is it. See this temporary phase of life from a broader perspective. When you see life in a broader picture something will shift from within you, you will wake up and see, ‘Oh wow, what am I worried for. Just turn back and see, ten years back you were worried and you are still here now. 5 years back you were worrying over nothing, you are still present now, alive. How much time you have wasted in judgments, worries and in unproductive thinking, yes or no? Yes, we should learn from our own experiences. How much time we waste in complaining and all our life energy gets drained and diseases come. Blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, etc all of these are a result of unproductive and negative feeling.
  • For a yogi this world is a penance, and for a bhogi being alone is a penance. Can there be life beyond penance?

Question – Gurudev, for a yogi this world is a penance, and for a bhogi being alone is a penance. Can there be life beyond penance?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Penance makes us strong. A Yogi is all alone in the forest and he feels happy. But when he is amongst people, and they pounce on him, pull his leg, or cause him pain, yet if he does not get angry and remains calm in his mind, then he has won. For a Yogi being alone is very easy. But for him to be comfortable and happy amongst people is a penance and a skill, which is necessary. Similarly, a bhogi is very comfortable in a crowd. But if he gets depressed being alone, then eventually he will be unhappy being in a crowd too. Why is this? It is because there is no fulfilment inside. If you cannot be happy with yourself, then how can you be happy with others? That is why, when you spend some time in silence, and sometime by yourself, you become so content from inside. Then you will not long for attention, or for some praise from others.
  • What happens when someone falls in love?

Question – Gurudev, what happens when someone falls in love?

Gurudev Sri Sri – After a while, the soap opera begins, you start demanding. When you start demanding, the love diminishes. The joy fades away. So then you say, “Oh I have made a mistake in this relationship.” Then there’s struggle and pain to get out of that relationship. After getting out of it, you get into one more and the same story repeats. Love is essential in relationships, not mere attraction. In love, there is submission. This is the difference between love and attraction. Though attraction forms the first step, you cannot remain on the first step for too long. You have to move on to the next. That is love. What is that you want to know about relationships? It is really to see how it can be long-lasting. Isn’t it? Three things are essential in any relationship :
    1. Right perception
    2. Right observation
    3. Right expression
Often people say nobody understands them. Instead of saying, “No one understands me,” you can say that you have not expressed properly. If you speak Russian to a Spanish, they won’t understand definitely. Right perception can happen when you see yourself from the shoes of the other person and look at the situation. Right perception, and then right observation. You may have perceived right but how do you react? How do you feel within yourself? Observing your own mind is the second important aspect. This observation within you, observation of sensation, observation of tendencies, observation of patterns within you is also essential. Perception of the other, observation of oneself. and then, right expression. Expressing ourselves in the right manner. if we see from a wider perspective, many aspects will come up: that person is grumpy for some reason. That is reflecting in the relationship, widening our lens of perception. Not just accusing someone for what they did, but rather than accommodating them and seeing them at a larger picture. This will help in the relationship. This is the first secret.
  • The Bhagavad Gita says that we are not the doer. Somebody else is acting through us, we are the medium. We say that the future is free will and the past is destiny. I feel this is a little contradictory. Can you please clarity?

Question – Gurudev, the Bhagavad Gita says that we are not the doer. Somebody else is acting through us, we are the medium. We say that the future is free will and the past is destiny. I feel this is a little contradictory. Can you please clarity?

Gurudev Sri Sri – There are two things: one is the doer, and the other is the enjoyer, and they both go together. If you are a doer, then you are also the enjoyer. If you’re not the doer, then you are also not enjoying. So, when you say, ‘I have not done it’, there is one aspect in you that remains untouched by the consequences as well as the actions. And there is another aspect in you that is doing everything, and also suffering or enjoying the consequences. So, there are two things inside you. There is a beautiful analogy in the Upanishad. On this tree of the universe, two birds are sitting. One is enjoying the fruits of action, and the other is just witnessing it. This is the depth of the philosophy. As you go deep in meditation and understand more and more, you will find these things happening. Whether it is very good work, or the worst job ever done, somewhere inside, you will feel that I didn’t do it, it has just happened. Have you felt that? It has happened to me, I didn’t do it. That is what it is. That is one thing which makes it happen. And the other thing is, feeling that I am notthe doer. This ‘not-doing’ one, is the director.
  • How do I satisfy my loved ones that are very demanding?

Question – Gurudev, how do I satisfy my loved ones that are very demanding?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Sometimes, it is okay to be little insensitive. When the demands are not justified or not logical, you do not have to feel obliged about those demands, but you don’t have to get upset either. Suppose you are not a doctor and someone is coming and demanding, “Give me medicine, give me medicine” What can you do? You will get upset? No, you will just smile and say, “Well I don’t know. I am sorry, I am not a doctor, I can’t treat you.” But if you are upset, it is your problem, isn’t it? Like that, we must find the inner strength. Once you find your inner strength, nobody can take away your calmness, your serenity, your peace. And when you are centered, you are able to manage any situation. However complex they are, however demanding they are, you can manage the situation. Got it? I was in a situation a few months ago. One gentleman I know him from long time, he was married happily with his wife, both of them are very good, they are on the spiritual path. But this man fell in love with another girl and went to a temple and got married with her as well. Now, the problem came. The earlier wife was heart-broken. She said, “You left me and you went to this other girl.” He said, “No, I cannot leave you and I cannot leave her either.” So this man was in such trouble. Then this lady said, “I will commit suicide and you live happily with her.” Then the other girl said, “If this is the case, then I will commit suicide because I have spoiled your family life. You were happily married, and I came and disturbed you.” She felt guilty and said, “No, I will commit suicide. You both live happily.” Now this man said, “No, I can’t leave either of you, what I will do is I will commit suicide.” You both live happily.” Now this man said, “No, I can’t leave either of you, what I will do is I will commit suicide.”
  • I don't speak out my problems to you knowing that you already know what is going on in my mind. I read a book where you said that a devotee must speak out his or her mind to the master without any hesitation regardless of how trivial the matter might be. Does this mean that I should be more vocal than I am at the moment or do silent prayers have effect?

Question – Gurudev, I don’t speak out my problems to you knowing that you already know what is going on in my mind. I read a book where you said that a devotee must speak out his or her mind to the master without any hesitation regardless of how trivial the matter might be. Does this mean that I should be more vocal than I am at the moment or do silent prayers have effect?

Gurudev Sri Sri – As long as the things are happening and you don’t feel like verbalizing it, its fine. There is no need that you must say it out, but many times when you say it out, you feel lighter from the inside. That is why I say speak out. You don’t need to hesitate.
  • Why is it necessary to do sadhana daily?

Question – Gurudev, why is it necessary to do sadhana daily?

Gurudev Sri Sri – When we say, “Do your sadhana,” it means sadhana needs to be done daily. This is because there are millions of cells in our brain. Some work today, and others work tomorrow just like workers take shifts in a factory. The factory is running continually, but the workers have shifts – they come, work and leave. Similarly, in our brain, neurons work in shifts. There are millions of neurons in your brain. For them to gain knowledge, all the neurons need to be trained.
  • The way I feel so connected to you, do you feel the same?

Question – Gurudev, the way I feel so connected to you, do you feel the same?

Gurudev Sri Sri – More than that. You know, connection means that there is a difference. I don’t feel connected for I don’t feel the difference. I feel you are a part of me.
  • What are the methodologies that I need to use to overcome inefficiency at my workplace? I have many people who are unable to cope up with the client's expectation. This sometimes makes me really angry.

Question – Gurudev, what are the methodologies that I need to use to overcome inefficiency at my workplace? I have many people who are unable to cope up with the client’s expectation. This sometimes makes me really angry.

Gurudev Sri Sri – Do you know why people don’t perform their jobs well, or learn slowly? This is because their mind is clouded. They have not rested well. They have no security inside them, and they are not happy. Teach them meditation. When they meditate, when they do a little breathing and meditation, they find calmness, happiness, and peace, and then they will be able to do so much better. Meals and meditation, make this part of your company. With some meditation, the mind relaxes and it becomes sharp, alert, and more energetic to do work. That is how it works. So meditation definitely helps to bring more productivity.

Question – Gurudev, this world is so selfish. People only value money. How to find true love?

Gurudev Sri Sri – Come on, don’t say that. In the world there are all kinds of people. Don’t blame or label the whole world as selfish. That is not fair. You know, there are good people on the planet. In fact, in big numbers. The cheats are only a small number. Suppose if you are also branded as one of those unkind, ruthless, and selfish persons, would you like to accept that label? Ask yourself, ask your heart, your mind. No! You find that you are very good, you are very kind, but everybody else is bad? That is not correct. Got it? In this world, there are good people and there are people who do not express goodness. That is all. But even they are good. There is no bad creature on this planet. Everyone, intrinsically is good. If you go talk to the worst criminals in the prison, you will see in their eyes that they are also good human beings. If you see through my eyes, there are no bad people on the planet. There are people who express goodness and there are people whose goodness is covered, and is not being expressed. That is all. You can help them uncover their goodness. You can help them express their goodness. That is how you should see the world. Never label the world as bad people. Then your attitude towards the world will also be very bad.

Never mind, when you are on this path, you will do everything with a smile. That is the strength of the path.
