  • Cestrum parqui , Plaqui, Green Cestrum, Willow Leaved Jessamine

    🌱🌼ORNAMENTALS OF SOLANACEAE🌼🌱

🌱🌼Cestrum parqui, commonly known as Palqui, or Willow-leaved Jessamine, is a species of flowering plant native to Chile. It is so widespread in Chile that they say of a well-known person: ‘He is as famous as Palqui ‘.
🌱🌼In Australia the plant is regarded as a noxious invasive weed and a significant hazard to livestock (especially cattle) which may eat it inadvertently or during shortages of other foods, often resulting in death.
🌱🌼 C. parqui is a fast-growing, straggling, woody, semi-evergreen shrub that grows over 3 m tall (or more in warmer areas) with one or a few fragile green stems. The alternate, light green leaves have an unpleasant rubber-like smell when crushed. It produces terminal sprays of small, fragrant, tubular yellow-green flowers followed by bunches of small, black, egg-shaped berries. All parts of the plant are reported to be highly toxic.
🌱🌼The small, black fruits of Cestrum parqui are highly attractive to birds, which play a major role in seed-dispersal, passing the seeds in their droppings: seedlings are thus often found growing under perching trees, along fence lines, and in creek banks, where it is also dispersed by water.
🌱🌼Though the plant is deemed toxic, it has been used in folk medicine to treat tumours and haemorrhoids and possesses sudorific properties ( perspiration-inducing), laxative and antispasmodic properties. Decoctions or infusions of the plant have also been administered in cases of intermittent fever and an infusion of the inner bark drunk to treat unspecified “stomach ailments”.
Branches of Cestrum parqui are used to slap patients during shamanic healing ceremonies.

🫛🌿🌎The Velvet Bean, scientifically known as Mucuna pruriens, is a tropical legume plant belonging to the Fabaceae family. Native to Eastern India and China, it is widely cultivated in Australia and South America as well. In Ayurveda it is known by the name Kaunch beej.

🫛🌿🧗Velvet Bean is a shrubby climber, with long, twining stems covered in velvety itchy hairs when the plant is young, but the hairs fall off the stem as the plant matures.
🫛🌿The leaves are trifoliate, and the plant produces purplish or white flowers in axillary panicles, which eventually give rise to fuzzy pods. The hairs on these pods can cause severe itch upon contact with skin. Hence the common name cow-itch bean.
🫛🌿🫘The seeds inside these pods are the valuable part of the plant, known for their medicinal and agricultural significance.
🫛🌿💊Velvet Beans have a rich history of medicinal use in traditional systems of medicine. They contain L-DOPA, a precursor of dopamine, making them valuable in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders. It also clhas anti-venom properties and is used to treat snake bites even of the deadly cobra. It is believed to improve reproductive health and have anti-ageing properties.
🫛🌿🚜Additionally, the plant is used in agriculture as a cover crop and green manure due to its ability to fix nitrogen in the soil. Velvet Beans also have pesticidal properties, making them beneficial in organic farming practices.
🫛🌿📛The genus name Mucuna is derived from the Arabic word mukun, referring to the bean. The species name pruriens is derived from the Latin word prurire, meaning “to itch,” alluding to the itch-inducing hairs on the pod surface, which can cause skin irritation upon contact.

  • Soybean , Glycine max

    1. 🫛🌿Soybean scientifically named as Glycine max, is an important legume crop native to East Asia ( significantly China).
🫛🌿It is an annual herbaceous shrub growing up to 2m tall, with erect branches that bear trifoliate leaves arranged alternately. The surface of leaflets is slightly hairy and has a mucronate apex.
🌸🌿White to purplish flowers are produced in axillary racemes. These mature into green hairy pods. These pods mature to a yellowish brown colour and bear 2 – 3seeds each. When the ripe beans are ready for harvest, the leaves will start to fall off, leaving the brown stems and the pods.
🫛🌿Soybean is one of the world’s most important sources of food and vegetarian protein. The processed seeds give soy milk, a valuable protein supplement as well as other soy food stuffs such as soy beancurd ( tofu). The famous Chinese Soy sauce is made from matured fermented beans. Soybean is also eaten cooked as a vegetable.
🫛🌿Soybeans are planted as a cover crop which suppresses weeds. They also make protein rich fodder for cattle and other farm animals.
🫛🌿The name Glycine comes from the Greek word glykys that means sweet, referring to the sweet taste of the legume. The term max translates to “greatest” in Latin, reflecting its significance as a major crop.

  • Common Bean, French beans , Phaseolus vulgaris

🫛🫘🌿 The Common Bean, also known as French beans is scientifically known as Phaseolus vulgaris.

It is a widely cultivated plant from the Fabaceae family. This versatile plant is native to South America, particularly in the regions of Mexico and Central America.
    🫛🌿🫘Morphology and Habit:
Common Beans are annual plants that exhibit a climbing or bushy habit. They have trifoliate leaves and produce white, pink, purple, or blue flowers. The plant develops elongated pods containing edible seeds, which are the familiar beans we consume.
    🫛🫘🌿Uses:
Common beans are a staple in various cuisines worldwide. Rich in protein, fiber, and essential nutrients, they are valued for their nutritional benefits. Apart from culinary uses, beans play a significant role in agricultural practices by enriching the soil with nitrogen through a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria.
    🫛🫘🌿Etymology:
The term “Phaseolus” is derived from the Greek word phaseolus, which means “a kind of pulse or edible legume.” The species name, vulgaris, originates from Latin and translates to “common,” highlighting its widespread cultivation and use.
🫛🫘🌿 Is it the same as kidney bean?
No, the Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and Kidney Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris var. vulgaris) are not the same, but they are closely related. Both belong to the same species, Phaseolus vulgaris, and share similar characteristics, such as their trifoliate leaves, climbing or bushy habits, and the ability to produce edible beans.
However, Kidney Beans are a specific variety within the broader species of Common Beans. Kidney Beans are known for their distinctive shape, resembling a kidney, and they are usually dark red or light red in color. They are commonly used in various cuisines around the world, especially in dishes like chili and bean salads.
    🫛🫘🌿 Toxicity:
All beans must be cooked well before consumption. Some beans, including certain varieties of Kidney Beans, contain a toxin called phytohaemagglutinin. This toxin is destroyed by boiling the beans vigorously for at least 10 minutes. Slow cooking or undercooking Kidney Beans can result in toxic reactions and difficulty in digestion leading to stomach discomfort.

  • Prostate cancer and medicinal plant

Climbing Oleander (Strophanthus gratus) is a woody tropical liana that produces large showy clusters of soft pink flowers with burgundy throats. The flowers have a delightful rose fragrance and appear on the tips of branches.

Despite its beautiful rose scent, the pretty Climbing Oleander is not as friendly as it appears. The plant contains high concentration of cardiac glycosides, which are organic compounds that increase the output force of the heart. Ouabain is the main glycoside found in the seed, it is odorless but very bitter and extremely toxic. Extracts containing ouabain have long been used by Somali tribesmen and other groups to poison hunting arrows.
The plant has shiny, leathery, olive green, oblong to elliptical, glabrous leaves. The leaves are used to treat gonorrhea and constipation, as well as applied externally to treat snakebites and to cure fever. The root is said to be an aphrodisiac. Most notably the seeds contain the highest concentration of glycosides which can be extracted and used as a rapid cardiac stimulant. Ouabain derived from the plant’s seeds is used as a treatment for heart failure
More recent studies have found a novel use that can prove relevant for treatment of prostate cancer. This plant is still poisonous and can cause nausea, vomiting, and heart problems if not used properly.
Popular as an ornamental it is grown in gardens and parks. The plant prefers full sun and fertile soil for optimum growth.
