Practicing these simple yoga postures for a few minutes every day will help prepare you better for the next migraine attack:

    Hastapadasana (Standing Forward Bend)

    Paschimottanasana (Two-legged Forward Bend)
    Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog Pose)

    The Standing Forward Bend invigorates the nervous system by increasing blood supply and also calms the mind.

    The Corpse Pose rejuvenates the body by bringing it into a deep state of meditative rest. You can end the yoga routine by lying down in this pose for a couple of minutes.
  • VARUNA MUDRA

    Varuna mudra is a simple yoga gesture that is designed to balance the water element in the body. It is a hasta (hand) mudra and one of a series of therapeutic mudras thought to have healing properties.

    To perform this mudra, the tip of the little finger and the tip of the thumb touch with light pressure, and the other three fingers remain comfortably extended.
    The name for this gesture comes from the Sanskrit Varun, which is the name of the Hindu god of water, and mudra, meaning “gesture” or “seal.” It is also known as jal-vardhak mudra, which also comes from the Sanskrit, jal, meaning “water,” and vardhak, meaning “enhance.”
    Varun mudra helps to increase water element in the body.Our body has 75 percent water.Water plays major role in every activity of our health system.water is present in protoplasm of cells,extracellular fluid,lymph,blood,tears,saliva,mucus,digestive juices,enzymes,hormones,semen,cerebrospinal fluid,etc.
    Any slight decrease in the percentage of water would result in many disturbances like dehydration. Practicing Varun mudra helps to increase water element in the body and restore the balance in the system.
    The element of water has a significant role in taste and tongue. Jal-vardhak mudra is useful to treat the disorders related to the tongue, taste, senses, dryness of the mouth.
    Jal is the main part of Pitta and Kapha Prakriti.If you are a Pitta or Kapha Prakriti person then you should practice this mudra moderately, this mudra increases Pita and Kapha dosha.If you are a Vata dosha person then practicing this mudra regularly will be hugely beneficial to prevent illness.
    DURATION FOR VARUNA MUDRA PRACTICE 
    30 minutes of regular practice is enough to get the benefits of Varun mudra.You can do this mudra at any time or in any place, but early hours of the morning or in meditation is preferable.
    PRECAUTIONS OF VARUNA MUDRA PRACTICE 
    If you are a Pitta or Kapha Prakriti person, then practice this mudra in moderate only.Please do not press the little finger too close to the nail. Maintain a distance between the nail and the pressure point because pressing too close to the nail would cause dehydration instead of increasing the water element in the body.
    It reduces the problem of dry skin
    It helps in eliminating constipation
    Reduces skin cracking
    Solves the problem of dryness of the digestive tract (throat, intestine and mouth)
    Improves digestionReduces joint pain (hence helpful in psoriasis arthritis also)
    Helps in blood purification
    Increases the circulation of blood and other fluids through the body
    It can help in preventing appearance of pimples
    Solves the problem of eye dryness

    Often people say that the mind is wavering, but the mind is not wavering. The mind is the wave. It is moving towards something. It is moving towards a higher joy.
    If you get a little joy, you want some more joy. This is because the mind always moves towards something bigger and something higher.
    Right from school days, what is it that you want? You want to get a higher grade. Which student does not want to get a higher grade? Which artist does not want to perform better? Which scientist does not want to reach the peak? Which engineer does not want to build something beautiful? So wanting perfection is in the nature of human beings. The mind wants to move towards something higher, and the way to achieve it is Yoga.
    Yoga Helps You Get Out Of Misery
    If you are miserable, yoga helps you get out of your misery. If you are very restless or unhappy, yoga brings you that equanimity. It first relives you from misery and then brings you equanimity.
    Yoga also helps you attain skills that you do not have. The word for qualification in Sanskrit is Yogyata, which means that which has come out of yoga. It is action that brings you happiness or sorrow. And if you are skillful in action, then your action will only bring you happiness, or less misery. So with yoga, one attains
    Relief from sorrow
    Equanimity
    Skill in action.

    There is a fourth step to Yoga, which is to take you to the ultimate knowledge.
    Our misery is when we don’t open our eyes and see the vastness of the life. Misery means short vision. Yoga is expanding your vision – taking your eyes to the higher truth. If your mind is filled with fog, then your perception of life is very foggy. If your mind is filled with anger, you will find that everybody is mocking you. You will find that everybody is against you.
    You project yourself to people, situations, and the world around you. That is what you do. All the time we are projecting ourselves. Seldom are we able to see the reality the way it is. That is why Yoga is important.
    Again, yoga is not just doing some exercises. Yoga has been mistaken as just asanas. It is not. It is the expansion of consciousness. It is an emotional integration, a spiritual elevation with a touch of mysticism, which gives you a glimpse of something which is beyond all imagination. It is the connection to what we are.
    If you look at a baby, a baby does all the Yoga postures. But not only that, the attitude of a baby, the way it breathes, its perceptual ability or sharpness, and its ability to stay in the present moment (all the qualities of a Yogi), a baby expresses.
    So, Yoga should not be limited or misunderstood as just some exercise. It is a holistic development, expression and connection of human life.
    Yoga Brings You Peace
    Yoga is a complete science. It unites body, mind, spirit and the universe. Yoga brings that much needed and longed for peace and ecstasy in every individual. Not only that, it also makes such a difference in one’s behavioral pattern, thought pattern, and one’s attitude. For a sane life these days, yoga is almost indispensable. If you want to be sane, sensitive, sensible, strong and intuitive, you have to follow Yoga.

    Nearly 40% of the school teachers in Europe are depressed, and if teachers are depressed what are they passing on to the kids? It is scary, right; they can only pass on what they have! When we were children, our teachers were so enthusiastic; they pumped enthusiasm in to the kids. They gave us ideas, ideals, more values, and they showed us how to excel in our field. Today when you see teachers who are supposed to be the guiding light of society being depressed, it is very depressing. We cannot feed half the population with prosaic. After a while even that stops working. Here is where you have to teach them life skills, the skill to handle their mind and their negative emotions. And the secret is right under their nose! Using their own breath, they can calm the mind and change how they feel.
    You do not have to be a victim of your feelings; you can be the master of your feelings. It is just a matter of education. Yoga is one way; of course, many think yoga is just doing a few exercises, standing on the shoulders or standing on the head, it is not so! All this comes under the purview of yoga, meditation, life skills and living well programs, and this can help people.
    A few centuries ago, not everyone used toothpaste. Dental hygiene was not a common thing. Today, in every corner of the world, people brush their teeth first thing in the morning and the last thing in the night. Similarly, I would say mental hygiene is essential. Learning how to be in the present, keeping your mind fresh and free of all the impressions of the past, anger, jealousy, greed, and seeing life from a broader perspective.
    Turn back and see, all the events – pleasant and unpleasant are all gone; there are only traces of memories left in our brain, that’s all. If youth to have an awakened mind or the wakefulness in the mind, it will make a lot of difference.

    Yoga-Kundalini Upanishad

    Did you know that according to the Yoga-Kundalini Upanishad obstacles in Yoga are self doubts, confusion, indifference, habit of giving up, being caught up in worldly drama, and suspicions?
    The Yoga-Kundalini Upanishad (Sanskrit: योगकुण्डलिनी उपनिषत्), also called Yogakundalya Upanishad (Sanskrit: योगकुण्डल्युपनिषत्, a minor Upanishad of Hinduism, in Sanskrit text, is one of the 20 Yoga Upanishads, and is one of 32 Upanishads attached to the Krishna Yajurveda. In the Muktika canon, narrated by Rama to Hanuman, it is listed at number 86 in the anthology of 108 Upanishads.
    It is a highly significant text related to the exposition of the Kundalini Yoga, describes Hatha and Lambika yoga, and the last chapter is primarily about the quest of self-knowledge, Atman, Brahman (the Non-dual Brahman) and living liberation. It is an important text in Tantra, to the Shakti tradition of Hinduism, and considered one of the most important texts on Kundalini Yoga.
    The text is set in verse, structured into three chapters, with a total of 171 verses. The first chapter has 87 verses, and discusses yoga practice. The second chapter with 49 verses discusses Khecari (Sanskrit: खेचरि) knowledge. The last chapter consists of 35 verses and discusses soul, Brahman, meditation and living liberation.
    The first chapter opens with the statement that human mind is influenced by memories and Prana (vital breath, inner life-force). First and foremost, states the text, a yogin should begin by mastering Prana. It asserts that this can be achieved by Mitahara, Asana and “rousing of inner power (Kundalini)” (Shakti-chalan). In this chapter two Asanas (postures) as a part of practice for the yogi and yogini – Padmasana (lotus posture) and Vajrasana (diamond or kneeling posture). The breath control practice in several ways including Surya-Kumbhaka, Ujjayi-Kumbhaka, Sitali-Kumbhaka and Bhastra-Kumbhaka are also elaborated.The text lists as obstacles to progress in a yogin as following: self doubts, confusion, indifference, abnormal sleep, habit of giving up, delusions, being caught up in worldly drama, failure to comprehend descriptions, suspicions regarding the truth of yoga. The text also states that those who are ill or injured should not do this yoga, and those who are suffering from excretory obstructions should refrain as well.
    Further, in the first chapter, the Chakra (with sixteen petals called Anahata is awakened, linking vital fluids of the human body symbolically to moon and sun, that is arousing the awareness of cold and hot essence within respectively. Six chakras are listed as: the Ajna in the head (between the two eyebrows), Vishuddhi (root of the neck), Anahata (heart), Manipuraka (navel), Svadhishthana (near genital organ) and Muladhara (base of spinal cord). These are centers of Shakti (power, energy, subtle force). It also outlines the destination for the journey of Kundali-yoga practice to be the knowledge of Brahman (eternal, changeless reality), Atman (soul, self), and inner liberation.
    The second chapter opens with a praise and wonders of Khechari (transversing the ethereal regions) knowledge, with the assertion that “one who has mastered this, is devoid of aging and mortality” and free from the suffering from diseases. Using a cryptic code the text explains how to extract Khechari-Vidya bija (seed). These are then constituted into a Khechari-mantra as “Hrīṃ, Bham, Saṃ,Shaṃ, Phaṃ, Saṃ and Kshaṃ”.
    The third chapter discusses the state of Samadhi and that is Jivanmukta (living liberation). It defines Samadhi as that state of Atman and pure consciousness in which “all is known as one” and the existence in the nectar of oneness.

    Pancha Prana (ಪಂಚ ಪ್ರಾಣ)

    Did you know that the colloquial usage of Pancha Prana (ಪಂಚ ಪ್ರಾಣ) as an expression of love to our grand children, literally means ‘the life force’, the classical five elements in Hinduism known as Prana, Apana, Vyana, Udana and Samana?
    Pancha Prana (ಪಂಚ ಪ್ರಾಣ), also known as Pancha Prana Vayu or the five energy flows, is ‘the life force’, formed by the classical five elements in Hinduism, called Prana, Apana, Vyana, Udana and Samana. It is used commonly as colloquial expression to describe deep love for our grandchildren. 
    Pancha Pranas are the five energy flows which enable the body and its organs to function, and in fact are responsible for the entire physiology of the human system. Prana=vital, air-Vayu; and also Prana= prana-the same word applies to the Vayu that flows in the chest to thorax region. The five Pranas or Prana Vayus as energy forces are involved in intricate integration, circulation and handling the energy to make the body function. The source of the Pancha Prana is Maha Prana. This Maha Prana is the cosmic energy and is manifest in each person as the Kundalini Shakti. There are five upapranas also which are minor vital airs; these are Naga, Kurma, Krikar, Devadutta and Dhananjaya for belching, vomiting, moving eyelids , creatings hunger pangs , Yawning, nourishing decomposing and ejecting from the womb. Its main needs are safety, secuiry and defense. 
    In Yoga Therapy, the Pancha Pranas have a pivotal role with the functioning of the organs. If any of the five pranas are depleted or not functioning optimally, diseases may occur in their corresponding organs.
    In the Yoga vashistha, a philosophical text attributed to Maharishi Valmiki, it is statetd that Prana, the divine vital air, does everything in the body: much like a machinist performs the actions of the machine.
    According to Vedanthic philosophy, the five vital airs of Pancha Prana namely Prana , Apana , Saman , Udan , and Vyana essential for breathing , urinating, defecating, blood circulation, swallowing and digestion. Pancha Prana, are integral to the Pramamaya Kosha, the vital air sheath which is the first layer of the subtle /astral body; Kosha is “sheath”, a covering of the Atman, or Self according to Vedantic philosophy. 
    The five major Pancha Prana Vayus in the body, classified according to their location and functions, are briefly explained below.
    Prana, the first and the main of the five pranas, moves upwards, functions and pervades between the throat and the diaphragm. In fact, it governs the lungs, larynx and chest region. It provides the basic function of respiration and pumping. It is the force by which breath is drawn into the body, and associated with the element of Air.
    Apana, the second of the five Pranas, flowing downwards, basically relates to elimination, controlling organs situated between the naval and the perineum including, small and large intestine, kidneys, urinary system and reproductive systems. Its basic fucntion is to eliminate waste from the body as faeces, gas and urine It also controls ejaculation of sperm, monthly menstrual cycle for women and expulsion of foetus during childbirth. It is associated with the element of water.
    Samana Vayu, with a sideward movement, that operates between the naval and the diaphragm, has control over the functioning of organs such as stomach, liver, pancreas, spleen, small and large intestine. Disturbance of the Samana Vayu results in indigestion and other stomach disorders. It is associated with the element of Fire.
    Udana Vayu, associated with the element of ether, space, operates above the throat, face and head region, and is thus also called Udana Shakti. It is accountable for all the sense organs and keeps a person erect. It governs thought and consciousness; harmonises and activates the limbs and all their associated nerves, ligaments, muscles and joints. It is responsible for all the sensory organs and functioning of the brain. Apart from that it controls the organs of movement including hands and legs.
    Vyana Vayu, representing the element of Earth, is the reserve force of energy for the other four pranas. It infuses the entire body and maintance a proper balance of all the activities and movements of the body. It carries the nutrients needed to every cell of the body. It sustains muscular movements and carries the sensory and motor impulses from different parts of the body. It is the reson for perspiration from the skin. Gooseflesh, caused by cold or fright also comes under the jurisdiction of Vyana Vayu. 
    Prana is present in everything – whether living or non living! Everything in creation has prana – with varying degrees of density/frequencies.
    A Yoga Guru explains the functioning of the Pancha Prana in a day to day life of human beings as: “…you will see that it follows a predictable pattern: you take things in (food, water, information, experiences); then you process them one way or the other; then you absorb the nutrients or knowledge from the processing; you eliminate the stuff that you don’t need; and as a result you grow, both physically and mentally. This is an example of your vayus (currents of prana) at work.”

    Sound is produced through contact, vibration and obstruction.
    This is called āhata. However cosmic hiss if one can hear is eternal and existent. This is called Anāhata. It is not produced by us but only heard. A yogi can hear this. In sādhana one makes the sound oneself (by doing mantra japa), in a rhythm, resonant with the vibrations of his nādis and his breath. Through this one will be able to discover the deeper vibration. This way of merging individual with cosmic is called mantra yoga.
    Mantra is said to be the sound-form of Devata (god-form). One realizes Devata through the chanting of mantra in mantra yoga. Mantra yoga concentrates on nada (sound) to strike rhythm between individual and cosmic vibration, to activate the right nādis, to expose one into the cidākāsa or daharākāsa (causal space). Śabda (sound) is the tanmatra (subtle attribute) of mahābhuta (primal element) ākasa (space). And through śabda one tries to turn his vision inwards from ākasa to daharākāsa, through chanting the mantra, by producing sound to slowly listening the anāhata sound without producing it. Eventually when mantra yoga is achieved, one achieves laya yoga also, since his consciousness is directed to daharākāsa where his devata resides.
    Pancadāsi, the root mantra of ŚrīVidyā is said to be the sound-form of the Mother. The mantra is divided into three kūtas or parts with five syllables each. The first is called Vāgbhava Kuta, the Mother’s head. The second is called Madhya Kūta, the trunk – from neck to navel. The third is Śakti Kūta, the part below navel.
    Saraswati Sūkta of the Rigveda says that Vāk or word is of four forms – parā (eternal), pasyanti (experienced by seer in a state of deep consciousness), madhyama (when it translates as idea in the intellect) and vaikhāri (when it is verbally expressed). Realizing parā Vāk or Nāda Brahman through a regulated chanting of mantra, first externally then mentally and then finally without producing it, is mantra yoga.

    Art of living has only 5 basic principles, yet it can change our lives and improve the quality of every day life so much. Here they are: 
    1. You know there are ups and downs in life. Pleasant things happen, unpleasant things happen. The first principle is: In all situations, keep the balance of the mind.
    Often what happens, when things go our way, we are so happy. But when things don’t go our way, we get depressed and angry. To maintain equanimity is the first principle.
    2. The next principle is to accept people as they are. Accept difference; it could be temperament, ideology, whatever. Accept them as they are. A very important principle.
    3. The third principle is, don’t be a football of others’ opinions. Don’t worry what others are thinking about you. In fact, nobody has time to think about you. Look into yourself and see what is right and what is not right for you, by yourself.
    4. The next point is, don’t see intention behind others’ mistakes. Very important. Inside every culprit there is a victim crying for help. Recognizing that.
    5. And live in the present moment.
    These are the basic five things that we have to keep in mind.
    What happens with these basic principles? Three things happen. Purity of heart, clarity of mind, and sincerity in action. That’s all.

    The next sutra is:
    ” वितकॅविचारानन्दास्मितारूपानुगमात् सम्प्रज्ञातः “
    Vitarka vichara aananda asmita roopa anugamat sampragyaatah 
              
    What is the purpose of this sadhna? Vitarka – when your mind has a special logic to pursue in the world and to perceive the truth. Tarka means logic. Kutarka means wrong logic – when then intention is not right and the logic is applied only to find fault; when you know deep inside you that something is not right, but you still logically prove that it is right.
              
    Vitarka is special logic. You may be talking about dispassion and logically you are understanding it, and this logical understanding, hearing or talking has a certain effect on your consciousness. It elevates your consciousness. You are in a different space. This is samadhi.
              
    Samadhi means equanimity. “Dhi” is the intellect – the faculty that sustains you; faculty of consciousness. Now, we are in a state of Samadhi, because we are talking about the Self with a definite logic, an undeceivable logic. Logic can always change. You can put it on one side or you can put on the other. There is no loyalty. But Vitarka is a logic which cannot be condemned, which cannot be reversed. For example, if somebody is dead then it is obvious that he is dead. You know that the life that was there in the body is not there anymore. And that is the end. At that moment, your consciousness is in a different state. When you are not emotionally connected to anybody, what’s happening to your consciousness? You feel that it is the end, for instance, when a movie is over, there is a feeling that all is over. When people walk out of the movie theatre, they are in a particular state of consciousness. They come out of a musical concert with a feeling that it is over. It is the same for a festival or for a course. When a course is over, the participants say that it has ended and they leave. The show is over. At that moment, there is a definite logic followed in the mind – irrefutable logic, irreversible logic that triggers your consciousness. It is so obvious.
              
    Life is like this. It is so obvious. Everything is changing. They are bound to change;to dissolve and disappear. This vitarka elevates one’s consciousness. One does not have to sit with the eyes closed or eyes open. The feeling of “I”, the consciousness is all that is. Everything is empty. Everything is in a state of fluidity. The whole world is just a quantum mechanical field. This is Vitarka. The entire science is based on tarka, irrefutable tarka of it, the quantum physics or whatever you call it. That is Vitarka. वितकॅ अनुगम समाधि । This is Samadhi.

    There is a story about Diogenes of Greece. When Alexander the Great saw him, he was being carried out to be sold as a slave. The people who were taking him to be sold also looked like slaves. Diogenes announced that he was a slave and asked loudly who wanted to buy him. Because he was roaring like a lion, it was difficult for the people to make out who was the slave and who was selling the slave.
       
    Before Alexander the Great came to India, people in his country had told him that if he found some sanyasi here he should bring them back with him; that, they were very precious and were there only in India. So, when he was in India he ordered that some sanyasis should come to him. But, nobody would come. He then sent a message threatening them. He said that if they did not come, he would chop off their heads. Even then, nobody came. So he said that he was going to take away their books – the four Vedas and some other scriptures, too. The pundits agreed and said that they would give him all their books the next day. Overnight, the pundits made their children memorize all the manuscripts. And then they gave them to Alexander. They told him that they did not need them any more. Alexander got the manuscripts but he wanted a sanyasi, and a sanyasi would not come. Finally, he had to go to one sanyasi and threaten him saying that he would chop off his head if he did not go with him. The sanyasi replied that Alexander could do is if he wanted. The mighty emperor could not even look into sanyasi’s eyes. He could not stand the power of dispassion that he saw there. Here was a person who, for the first time, did not care for an emperor.
              
    When Alexander was in India, some people presented him some golden bread in a plate. And he said that he was hungry and wanted some real bread. They replied that he was an emperor, and how could he eat mere wheat bread. So, they had prepared golden bread for him. Alexander said that they were making fun of him and he was starving and wanted real bread. Hearing this, the people got some real bread. They asked him whether such bread was not available in his country. And why had he conquered so many places? Was it to get bread and if he too ate the same bread that was eaten in India? This shook Alexander for a moment. He felt that it was the truth. What was the point of conquering country after country. All that he needed was to live peacefully and happily. When he did not have the happiness and peace, and when he didn’t have that care and concern for his people, putting his stamps on all the villages and towns had no meaning.
              
    So it seems Alexander said that, when he died, his hands should be kept open. He wanted the people to know that, though he conquered so many countries, Alexander the Great was going with empty hands. That he could not take a thing from this earth.
              
    Dispassion is the strength in you. Even if the Lord of the Wealth comes, you do not need to take anything from Him. That is the strength of dispassion. It is not arrogance. It is centeredness. If you are so centered and calm, then you can understand that everyone who has come to this world has come to give something and not to take anything from here. A very different shift takes place.

    Question : Dear Guruji, is it possible to get stuck in achieving a mood of dispassion, turning one’s attention to the separation between self and thoughts, emotions and sensory data, and is it possible to see more clearly who you are? But if a habit is developed of separating oneself from everything in an artificial way, you will lose spontaneity, attunement with nature and will not fully engage in life by giving it your one hundred percent. How do you walk this tightrope, and how do you know if you are too far on one side or the other? Thank you, Jai Guru Dev.
              
    Guruji : Dispassion does not divide you. In fact, it connects you. It connects you to the present moment so totally that you can be one hundred percent in anything that you are doing. When you are not dispassionate, then what happens? You are linked to the past or future. You are not one hundred percent connected to the present and are more divided. So when your mind is hoping for something in future or regretting the past, it is not hundred percent with the moment – that means it is divided already.
              
    When you are fully centered while doing anything in the world, you are hundred percent with every moment. You may be eating, and you are eating hundred percent. You enjoy every bit of it. You can feel every sip of the soup that you are having. Every bite of the food tastes great. Every sight is fresh and new. So your love is like the first love every moment. When you look at anybody or anything, they are all charming to the core; as if you are seeing for the first time.
              
    Dispassion doesn’t take away the joy from you. Dispassion gives the joy which nothing else can give. There is a verse in Shankaracharya that says, “Kasya sukham na karoti viraagaha.” What pleasure can dispassion not give? It gives all the pleasures because you are so totally in the moment. It puts you hundred percent in the moment. Every moment is a peak experience.
              
    The so-called dispassion in the world seems so dry. People who think they are very dispassionate are melancholy. They are sad. They run away from the world and then they call it dispassion. Then, they say that they have renounced the world. This is no renunciation or dispassion. People who escape because of failure, misery, sorrow, or apathy feel that they have dispassion. Dispassion is something more precious, more refined, and more valuable in life. If you are dispassionate, you are always centered – full of joy and contentment. Anybody would like to be like that.

         ~ Honouring The Practice ~

    Buddhists have got their own method of determining who is enlightened and who is not. Somebody who sings, dances, and enjoys living in the world is not enlightened. Somebody who mingles with their family members is not enlightened. The enlightened have to renounce their family. I have seen many of these so-called sanyasis. They are so afraid of meeting their own family. They fear that they could develop attachment for them again.
              
    I remember in one of the ashrams, an intimate, a so-called sanyasi and renunciate, would not meet his mother, an old lady who was nearly seventy years old, whe. she would go there to meet him. He would meet everybody else. What had this poor old lady done that he would not even meet her? She would cry. Many of the renunciates – the so-called nuns, brothers and fathers are very cruel to their own family people because that is their idea of renunciation. Why can’t the close relatives be loved when everybody else can be? Why can’t you see them with the same eye? This is a concept. Many sanyasis go through this difficulty about their family members.
              
    Amidst all concepts about enlightenment, we forget the essence – dispassion and being centered. Being centered despite everything and living in the world. It is the second essential principle in Yoga. Abhyasa and Vairagya.
              
    Three gunas come in cycles in our life – sattva, rajas, tamas. When sattva comes, there is alertness, knowledge, interest, joy and happiness. When rajo guna comes, there are more desires, feverishness, restlessness, sadness, etc. When tamo guna comes, there is delusion, attaching, lack of knowledge, lethargy, etc. There three phase come in life in cycles. But one who is centered will watch, witness and just move through them, very naturally and easily, without being averse to any.
              
    What happens when there is aversion? You promote it. You stay with whatever you are averse to. You continue to crave for whatever it is that you want. You allow the craving to continue. Therefore, moving through the guna without craving or aversion is a real skill. And that is Yoga. Yoga karmasu kaushalam – the skill in action is Yoga. The word Yoga means skill – skill to live your life, to manage your mind, to deal with your emotions, to be with people, to be in love and not let that love turn into hatred. In this world everyone loves but that love doesn’t stay the same for long. Soon, it turns into hatred;sometimes almost immediately. But Yoga is that skill, that preservative, that maintains love as love all the time.

Yoga makes your emotions softer and more peaceful, and you blossom in your emotions. It brings freedom in your expression and your thought patterns. These are the real signs of Yoga. It is not just to do with the flexibility of the body. Of course, that too is a part of Yoga. The body becomes flexible, and the mind grows in faith and conviction. If all this happens, know that it is the gift of Yoga, and consider yourself as a Yogi.

    Many people think of the eight limbs of Yoga as a step-wise process to go level by level. They think that one has to strive to become proficient in one level before ascending to the next. This is not really so. I would say that all these eight limbs or aspects of Yoga are woven together and happen simultaneously. When a child is conceived in the womb, then all its organs are formed together. It is not that first the feet are formed and then the arms take shape. No, it is not so. All the limbs and organs develop together. This is why we must take all these eight aspects or limbs of Yoga together at every step. Only then can we experience the fullness and totality of Yoga, and can bring about an extraordinary transformation and experience in our life.
