There are three stages or qualities in enlightenment. One is being childlike, another is being intoxicated and forgetful, and the third is being chaotic and devilish. It is said 'devilish' is the third quality in enlightenment. Devilish implies enormous force, power and energy that is very chaotic. It can do anything. It can move rocks, and work several days without sleep.

This can take you away from your center. Or any special knowledge, skills or attraction can take you off your center. An astrologer can distract you by offering to tell you all about your future. Immediately the mind goes there. Knowing this or that, and doing this or that can take you off your center, your focus, your devotion, and off your fulfilment. Just be fulfilled, happy and settled immediately wherever you are. Janaka said that nothing could move him.
His mind was fulfilled and settled. And he was joyful by his very nature.
His eyes were open, but they did not see anything. There are three stages or qualities in enlightenment. One is being childlike, another is being intoxicated and forgetful, and the third is being chaotic and devilish. It is said ‘devilish’ is the third quality in enlightenment. Devilish implies enormous force, power and energy that is very chaotic. It can do anything. It can move rocks, and work several days without sleep. Devilish is being like the devil, not the devil itself. It’s like an enormous, energetic, unimaginably energetic. It could be this stage or be intoxicated, forgetful or childlike, playful and natural. These three colours come and go, they reign and go. Somewhere the change does not happen and somewhere the change happens.
Janaka said that his eyes were open, but he was not seeing anything. His mind was empty. His heart was full, yet it was centered. Having known himself as the witness, existed and the Divine Himself, what existed was only God. It is all hollow and empty. Everything is hollow and empty. And that is what ‘is’. Whatever ‘is’ is. Nothing is. That is inside, outside, everywhere. When the chattering mind stops, you are established in your Self.
“There’s no disappointment, nor do I want to get liberated from anything.” Wanting to get liberated from something becomes a bondage! ‘I want to free myself from this’, becomes a big bondage. And that is when you’re not natural. When you want to run away from or get rid of your pleasure or pain, then you are more with it. Why is this desire not there when you are asleep? Though it is there, you are not with it. You do not want to get away from it. You are already liberated. You are already free.
Many people are caught up in trying to get liberated – entire Buddhist monasteries all over the world! If you ask the people living there what it is that they want and why they sit day and night observing and meditating for years, they will tell you that they want liberation. They are meditating for nirvana. If you ask any one if they have got nirvana, they’ll tell you they have not got but that they want it. If they want it, they will never get it. They want nirvana but they will never get it. You may ask other meditators what they want. They will tell you that they want Brhama consciousness. If you want it then you will never have it! The ‘want’ is the obstruction to obtaining Brhama consciousness! Can there be something more foolish than that? This is the highest degree of foolishness!
Ashtavakra says, ‘Drop it and relax.’
